A group of 6 of us are heading to a French BYO here in Philly. This is partially a celebration of my birthday, so I want to pull out a variety of bottles from the cellar of things that I’d like to try. I’m thinking we’ll drink 4-5 bottles over the course of the meal. So I’ve got two definite whites and two definite reds, with a third “swing” red. I’ll definitely giving the two “definite” reds some air time before hand. The third red is an everyday drinker that will not really need much air time in case we need to crack it open. So I’m looking for some advice about in which order you’d serve the wines (do not worry about the food). I have them arranged in the order I think makes the most sense.
- 05 Ratzenberger Steeger St. Jost Riesling Trocken Grosses Gewachs
- 06 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault 1er Cru Charmes
- 06 St. Cosme Gigondas Hominis Fides (100% Grenache)
- 01 Pontet Canet
- 06 Potel Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee Gerard Potel [*if necessary]
I was thinking of commenting on this, but the order looks fine to me. Number 6 is perhaps misplaced, but it’s an ‘if needed’ bottle…
When I do tastings, I like to start with the big reds and move to whites at the end, or I get tannic buildup and can’t taste anything by the end. On a dinner, though, it doesn’t make as much sense.
Joshua, I’ve only had the Mersault and Pontet Canet, and not from these vintages, but I’d say there’s not really a perfect order for this list except the whites before the reds. However, I think if it was me, I would flip the order of the Gigondas and the Bordeaux, lose wine #5 with the idea if my party of 6 has already blown through 4 bottles, we’re probably (hopefully) ready for a sweet wine with dessert.
Enjoy your evening.
Thanks all –
Randy, your comment about the reds is where I was starting to lean. Plus, I agree about the sweet wine and may take one along for that purpose.
I’ve noticed this about Melissa and I think it’s pretty damn cool. If a thread is dropping (like alomst any one of my TN’s!!) she will do something to initiate the conversation. That’s something you don’t see at most places. Just thoght I would point it out.
Finally, a mao that I like…
