Just saw this in my inbox and thought I would share:
A Sea Smoke Update
Dear Friends,
In 1998 our founder, Bob Davids, discovered the perfect place to grow world-class Pinot Noir at a ranch property in the middle of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. The site has an exceptional microclimate, clay soils and an enviable southern exposure. Although Bob would have loved to acquire the entire ranch in 1998, only half of it was for sale. The half that Bob was able to purchase became Sea Smoke Vineyard—a vineyard that has since been hailed as one of California’s “grand cru” properties.
Recently the remaining half of this ranch became available. We are proud to announce that Sea Smoke has just acquired – and reunited – this amazing property. This represents the culmination of a 14-year quest for Bob and for Sea Smoke.
Those who know us well, know that Sea Smoke is – above all else – a magical piece of land. Our newly purchased acreage (all unplanted) is contiguous to Sea Smoke and shares the same ideal microclimate, soils and southern exposure. It is this distinctive terroir that has defined – and will continue to define – our wines.
While the vast majority of the property will remain in its natural state, as wilderness and wildlife habitat, our team will begin planting 30 acres of Pinot Noir this year on the reunited property. The additional vines will finally allow us to share our wines with some of the many people who have been patiently waiting for a spot on our List. Nothing else is changing here at Sea Smoke. The same small team of six people is still in place, and we continue to invest our hearts, our souls and our passion into making exceptional quality wines from one great piece of land.
Best wishes,
Victor Gallegos
