Screw WOTY, this is the end of the decade. What are your top wines over the last ten years?

I’ll have to think about mine.

Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru, ‘Clos des Forets St. Georges’, Domaine de l’Arlot 1999. 4 years ago.

Not counting “tasting pours” (i.e., more than 6 people to each bottle since, to my mind, it takes more than a few sips to know a wine truly well), off the top of my head, my top 10:

1997 DRC Montrachet - I’ve had many others from DRC but none except this makes it to my list. Had this over lunch with 2 friends.
1955 Rauzan Ségla - ex-château.
1953 Siran - ex-château.
1966 Palmer - the best '66 Bdx I’ve had.
1990 Cheval Blanc - the only 100 Parker point wine I ever re-ordered.
1986 Montrose - for sentimental reasons.
1990 and 1982 Latour - The only 82/90 Médocs that make my list.
1986 Mouton Rothschild - Had this from many bottles with lots of variation; but when it’s on, it is truly superb.
1967 Yquem

I’ve had many older and more “impressive” and “name/vintage-droppable” wines, but these are the ones I, offhand, consider the best I’ve had in the last 10 years.

1990 Jayer VR Cros Parantoux
1990 Chave Cuvee Cathelin

I drank another killer btl of 1998 Reine des Bois tonight, but not as good as one month ago. Not wine of the decade material, but great stuff.

This is not the end of the decade.

That being said, it’s hard to find better wine than 1970 Petrus or 1945 Taylor VP.

My wine of the 90s was a 1985 cos destournel by the glass at soho wine bar in 96
I remember the scene like a movie
opened my eyes to wine

in that vein, my wine of the decade was a 2001 vogue chambolle 1er
I also have that movie, in detail, in the Rolodex

that wine twisted my head in a knot
opened my eyes to burgundy

rk

What a nice wine Rob.
I love those 01 Vogue’s.

My top wines have probably been at Bern’s in Tampa and from a friends generosity.

1971 Morey Monge RSV out of magnum (DRC)
1949 Chateau de la Tour Clos Vougeot
1948 DRC Grands Echezeaux out of magnum (Better than a 1978 La Tache to me)

The 1971 Morey Monge was the very first DRC that I had tasted that made me understand the hype.
My watershed older Burgundy experience.

All three of these are visceral wines that evoke emotion.

There is one wine that will always hold a special place forever .

2001 Vogue Musigny

That is the one that I drank to toast my dad when he passed on.

Funny how the thread in 2004 pulls in many palates I still respect

happy holidays don, my friend

Thanks Rob.
Happy Holidays to you too.

Its not? Opps.

Another year until the end of the decade but the first nine years for me:

1947 Ausone
1961 Ausone
2000 Ausone
1947 Lafite
1947 Latour
1947 Haut Brion
1945 Mouton
1982 Mouton
1989 Hommage Jacques Perrin
1990 Troplong Mondot
2000 Haut Brion
1997 and 1998 Massetto (with Otto Dobre by my side)
1992 and 1994 Harlan and Screaming Eagle all together on my birthday in 2002 94 Harlan was the winner by a hair. Coincidently, the 1997 Harlan might be the worst wine of the past nine years.

Goofballs:

Shouldn’t this be a wine MADE or RELEASED in the last ten years, not TASTED in the last ten years.

If so, I’m sayin 05 Mugnier Moose Juice.

SQN Poker Face
2003 Alban Reva
1996 Krug
2001 d’Yquem
1988 d’Yquem
1990 Leoville Poyferre
1998 Grange
1989 Bonneau Celestins (No added Maybach)
1970 Taylor VP

2003 SQN Papa, 2001 Fontodi Flaccianello, and 2002 Scholium Sylphs Guman are wines that were made this decade and gave me the most drinking pleasure.

1990 Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva
1985 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate Riserva
1985 Francesco Rinaldi Barolo Cannubio
1929 Jessiaume Pere et Fils Santenay Les Gravieres
1949 Bouchard Aine et Fils Nuits-St.-Georges Les St.-Georges
1962 Thomas Freres Romanee-St.-Vivant
1961 Pape-Clement
1985 Verset Cornas
1988 Knoll Gruner Veltliner Loibner Smaragd Vinotekfullung
1947 Lopez de Heredia Bosconia Gran Reserva

I’ve been lucky enough to have had the '78 Monfortino side-by-side with the '78 Giacosa Rionda Riserva about half a dozen times over the past five or so years, and they remain two of the greatest wines I’ve ever had the pleasure of drinking. My favorite recollection of all of those experiences would be the time that my wife and I were the only two drinkers of said bottles at an extended dinner - getting the chance to revisit both of these incredible wines over several hours was truly a once-in-a-lifetime treat.

1947 was a hell of a good year… I wish my parents had been collectors and had stocked up on their first child’s birth year wines… alas…

Bob,

You owe me big, and I’m hurt that you had a better time with your wife.

In no particular order:

83 La Mouline
89 Giacosa Rionda
78 Monfortino
78 Giacosa Rionda
89 Reserve de Celestins
82 Mouton
90 La Chappelle (however huge bottle variation)
64 B Mascarello Barolo
82 Latour
89 Haut Brion
01 Y’Quem

Two that really still stick out in my head:

1963 Taylor
1990 Cheval Blanc

OH, I totatly forgot…the 1970 Mayacamus out of Magnum. OMFG!

Well, my vintage of the decade was the 2000 Bordeaux. More classical and with higher quality tannins than the excellent, but slightly over-rated (to me) 2005. My wines of the decade would probably come from inside it, probably led by the 2000 LLC.
