Offer 1: Rosé Can You See?
Not all rosé wines are created equal. There are a minority that are designed to improve and develop with several years or more time in bottle. Domaine Tempier is a perfect example of my own inspiration of what a serious rosé can be. When preparing for self-employment nearly 30 years ago, Judi informed me that until we start making money, no more fancy beer or Tempier rosé. I could live without the beer, but needed something to scratch that rosé itch. While I do not attempt to copy any particular gestalt of wine, I’m certainly inspired by the classic icons and aim to create something that can stand alongside them with confidence and originality.
We are offering 3 vintages to illustrate the progression of this style from ‘a bit too young’ to ‘in the pocket’ to ‘still in the pocket’. The basic proportions of the Grenache, Zinfandel and Syrah are quite similar, only varying according to vintage leanings. At home we have been focused on the 23 and 24 vintages, reveling in each.

It perplexes me that few producers attempt this restrained, latent and food-friendly style. While it takes particular focus to harvest this unevenly ripening variety at the optimum time, the reward is a wine that stands right up alongside the typical ‘noble grapes.’ It’s almost like Zinfandel has become the elevator music of wine due to the generally elevated ripeness level most producers seem to think this grape must be forced to endure. This is the wine that really illustrates who we are and how we approach all the varieties we work with.

Offer 3: Green Valley Pinot Study
The Green Valley of Russian River Valley is getting a lot of attention as it is one of the two coolest overall parts of the AVA (our High Slopes Pinot Noir comes from the other one). I think it is interesting to look at the similarities and differences between Hallberg and Gunsalus Pinot Noir vineyard sites as well as between vintages. The clones and rootstocks are different in each site, but soils are both Goldridge. Both wines are fully destemmed, de-vatted and pressed according to their own needs, yet are remarkably similar in their extraction regimes and time in barrel. 2021 was more of a drought-like early season with a cooler finish. 2022 was kind of the opposite, with a warmer finish to the season punctuated by an immense heat dome that both these bottlings missed as they were harvested before that occurred. The 2021’s seem a bit more structured, while the 2022’s seem generally a bit more generous.

Offer 4: Platt and Gunslaus Library
We keep a deep library of most of our wines as our style rewards aging. We selected 2 vintages of Platt and Gunsalus Vineyard Pinot Noirs that are showing some bottle bouquet yet still retain most of their youthful, primary fruit.
Platt: Along with several esteemed colleagues, around 2000, I was invited to get in on the ground floor at Platt with several blocks of vines right at planting time. We were all able to select clones we wanted to use there. My run of vintages from this fine site was 2007-2021. This pair of library releases is in the middle section of this run, and they’re a great example of what fine Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir made in a structured style becomes with about a decade in bottle.
Around the same time, Glen and Pam Gunsalus planted this 10 acre vineyard in the Green Valley of Russian River Valley, which at the time was significantly cooler than other parts of the AVA. The Gunsalus’ put in several clones and a couple different rootstocks so that wineries could mix and match components to achieve their own stylistic vision from this site. I first started with them in 2006 and have since narrowed my focus down to one block of Dijon 777 on Riparia Gloire de Montpellier rootstock that produces a complete and complex wine year in and year out. Despite this bottling receiving some of the highest ratings of our Pinot Noirs by professional reviewers, I regularly neglect to reflect this fact in our pricing. I should really change that…
