Saturday night with some lovely old wines ( incl Petrus 70 )

Great friends visiting , so it was time to open up some long kept gems .

Dom Perignon 2002 : nice brioche on the nose , this is a great DP . Fresh and mineral , not too acidic .

Chevalier Montrachet 1995 Domaine Leflaive : the nose was very promising but I found the taste to be flat and uninteresting . Major disappointment

Puligny Montrachet 1999 en la Richarde d’Auvenay : also flat taste , we did not even finish the bottle . Strange

Coche Dury Meursault Perrieres 2005 JF Coche Dury : saved the white night . Briljant spicy nose , still young but delicious . This will go on for decades to come .

Vosne Romanee DRC cuvee Duvault-Blochet 1999 : still prime , fresh , strong but without complexity . A nice drink from a great vintage .

Echezeaux 1990 DRC : drinks marvelous now . Echezeaux is more delicate , more feminine than other DRC’s , it will never have the power of a Grand Ech . But it has loads of complexity , etheral . The other DRC’s from 90 add power to complexity , this is all about finesse and purity .

Petrus 1970 : highly anticipated… only to find out it was corked . Bummer . Luckily , I had a second bottle . Very powerful , robust Petrus , did not show any age at year 44 , stunning . There is no wine in Bordeaux that ages as well as Petrus imo .

Trotanoy 1975 : would outshine almost all other old Bordeaux ( except Petrus 70 ) . Also still fresh , creamy , powerful . More modern style , if you can ever accuse an old Pomerol of that feature . Both these wines are by no means " old " .

Ygay 1959 ( Rioja , Marques de Murietta ) : more interesting than delicious , this wine has cedar but also mushrooms on the nose . Slightly acidic on the finish .

Beaucastel 2001 Hommage : we had to finish with something fresh and this certainly was a great young wine ; still very powerful , too young to fully appreciate , but so massive . Loved it .

I had some Yquem and de Fargues waiting but our wives wanted to go home , also in view of the state of our livers and ability of speech ( I was told ) . That’s for next time . The highlight was Petrus 70 , not for it’s reputation but because it really delivered , at least the second bottle .

Nice work with the back-up bottle Herwig.

Do you think the D’Auvenay was oxidised?

Best Regards
Jeremy

nope , just flat . never had that before .

Really nice line up. I think your bottle of Ygay was a little off; it should have decent fruit as well.

I would probably put Latour at least as good as Petrus for ageability, but old Petrus has a richness to it that Latour never seems to get, while Latour has that extra measure of length.

I have to ask… How many people were enjoying that fine line up?

Thanks

Man, life is tough! But ameliorated by having back-up bottles for old Petrus.

Really nice. Most jealous of the Coche.

Robert , we were 4 ( the 3 women barely sipped )

No wonder you had a liver issue.

Impressive line up.

Thanks
