Saturday Night Wines: Peay, Tablas Creek, Eric Kent, Comtesse

  • 2004 Peay Vineyards Syrah La Bruma - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (11/21/2009)
Popped and poured, enjoyed over a hour or so. Black fruits, blood, iodine, iron, beef, minerality. Midweight, nice complexity and finish.
  • 2004 Tablas Creek Esprit de Beaucastel - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (11/21/2009)
Popped, decanted one hour, enjoyed over two. Bright, racy red fruit, very fresh, earthy. Very enjoyable.
  • 2006 Eric Kent Wine Cellars Syrah Dry Stack Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley (11/21/2009)
Decanted two hours, enjoyed with a pairing of grilled kielbasa on pumpernickel with mustard and carmelized onions. Very floral nose. Deep, rich, vibrant fruits. The smokiness of the wine really brought out the flavors of the kielbasa.
  • 2003 Réserve de la Comtesse - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (11/21/2009)
Popped, left open for 3 hours, enjoyed with a pairing of sliders; one topped with swiss cheese and sauteed mushrooms, the other with cheddar and bacon. Wonderfully vibrant nose of barnyard, tobacco and cedar. Smooth, satisfying, blue fruits, herbs, coffee. A very nice bottle of wine, and at $50 for a magnum, wonderful QPR.
