Each year Cook’s Lobster House in Harpswell Maine conducts a silent charity auction for Harpswell Home Heating Assistance. I contribute a lot of wine… this year, 20 cases in 28 lots. Most wind up selling for not much over half retail. I always offer a few better wines in case any wine geeks show up.
The auction also features art and crafts, food baskets, vacation rentals and gift certificates from places as far as Portland. This event benefits older people in Harpswell whose families may have been here for hundreds of years, but who now can be taxed out of their homes.
I invite friends to the auction and bring fine wines to drink. It’s all tax-deductible and it’s a lively, convivial event with lobster and other good grub.
