Santa Clara & San Benito Wine Heritage

2022 Ghostnote offering by Flatiron Wine in San Francisco in case anyone is interested:

There are a few threads where this would fit, not sure which is best. Let me know if you think it belongs somewhere else and I can move it.

Also, if anyone is interested in Flatiron’s write up of the Ghostnote wines, let me know. I can either post the notes or send them to you directly.

Hope this is helpful.

Forgot about this discussion, and should have posted a link to my Grape-Nutz write-up of visits last spring with Nat Wong at Siletto Family Vineyards and Ryan Stirm at his winery.
San Benito wine visits, April 2024

I read several months ago that the Siletto Vineyard properties are up for sale. Hopefully whoever takes over there will keep the many less-common grape varieties - it would be a shame to lose them.

I’d posted this elsewhere on Berserkers last fall but it belongs in this discussion too. Very nice article by wine writer Laura Ness.

Most of the article deals with Siletto Family Vineyards in San Benito County, which the Siletto family is putting up for sale. Actually two of their vineyards - Wheeler and Siletto, both of which the family owns - will be up for sale, while they plan to end their longtime lease on the third, Calleri.

Hopefully someone will be able to step in and take over the farming of these vineyards who will maintain their heritage. Wheeler has old Cabernet and Chardonnay vines (some planted over 50 years ago) while Calleri and Siletto include historic San Benito varieties such as Négrette and Cabernet Pfeffer as well as many unusual (for California) Italian varieties added to the vineyards by the late Ron Siletto. Over 30 smaller producers - a number of which will be familiar to many Berserkers - source fruit from these vineyards, and it would be a shame to lose these vines.
