If you are looking for more esoteric whites, try some of Ojai’s “ice wines,” late-harvest dessert style wines made from the Viognier grape. Adam has sourced the Viognier from different vineyards over the years - some in SB County and others in Ventura County. Very rich and unctuous – a little goes a long way – with a truly singular flavor profile. I always appreciate that the winery experiments with a lot of different varietals, sites and styles.
We were just there last week, tasted through almost all their wines (though not the Roussanne). Grenache Blanc was very good, Viognier was our favorite.
Jimmy,
Would love to introduce you to my wines on your trip if possible. I’ll be manning my tasting room this Saturday, getting in early but closing early for a wedding. Please email me or PM me and let’s connect. And, oh yeah, I will have some of my fresh bread, too
Larry does an amazing Dry Guwertz…maybe a Grenache Blanc too?
Dragonette’s Sauv. Blanc doesn’t suck; neither does Brander’s
Nicki Nelson makes several fabulous Chards at Liquid Farm
Loring’s relatively new Chards are very nice
Dv8 makes a nice Viognier
If oak is your thing, you may like Dierberg’s Chard
Had a great time meeting ‘Jimmy’ and his girlfrieND yesterday. Yep, I was there, and yep, I had bread - and fresh Biscotti too
Wow - how do you have a discussion on Santa Ynez whites without the complete focus on Sauvignon Blanc?
The best Sauvignon Blanc in California comes from Santa Ynez -
BRANDER VINEYARDS is a classic example - they do three different styles - all superb, and all so unique for what they are.
Dierberg does a great job with their Star Lane Sauvignon as well - as does the previously mentioned Dragonette -
Well there is the major problem that it is Sauvignon Blanc.
Not a variety you prefer, David?
Some great SBs coming out of here. Had the latest Brande Cuvee Natalie last night - it’s actually a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris and Pinot Gris. Tasty!
Cheers.
Nope. Pretty much hate the grape in any form except Sauternes.
