How bout a nice tasting/ fixed price menu that is interesting?

Unpretentous wine bar/tapas place?

Out of the way if you have a car kind of place?

Top notch interesting cuisine?

A couple of local cheapies with interesting food?

We will be staying down by the convention center and will have a car for at least some of the trip.

Thanks

Also, a Fish place that is not Oceanaire would be great.

Thanks

osetra

check out my blog for recs. I’ve eaten at a lot of the higher end as well as foodie hole in the walls.

if you want ethnic food that’s top notch, all traditional … none of that hybrid catered to American BS.

Pho Hao Cali in Linda Vista has some of the best pho out there.
Super Cocina has some of the bombest Mexican food out there, not your traditional tacos but stews, moles, and delicious things like that.
Wa Dining Okan has delicious japanese “tapas”. Their eel stuffed omelet is heavenly.
Izakaya Sakura has a great lunch and really fresh sushi.

For Seafood

I really like the Fishery in Pacific Beach, i think it’s one of the best in San Diego.

Wine Bar

3rd corner can’t be beat for wine selection + food.

Anything ending in “'erto’s.” Roberto’s, Alberto’s, Royberto’s, Rigoberto’s . . . newhere

Anything but the shit hole that is El Indio

I ate at Osetra in the Gaslamp district - sometime in May 2006. I recall vividly because it was my last night in San Diego, we (with wife and kids) were to leave the next morning for SF, so I had already returned my rental car - thus, I could drink all I wanted and we just walked back to the hotel (Sheraton Suites nearby). I remember we had fresh oysters, foie gras, magret de canard, scallops, sea bass, etc. Everything was pretty good except the scallops were a bit boring. My kids got a kick out of watching the “wine angel” go up the vertical cellar for my bottles.

We were in SD for a week and ate dinner in the Gaslamp 6 times. Two other restaurants there wer enjoyed were Blue Point and Asti.

In that vain, JV’s Taco Shop bests them all…

Thanks folks, appreciate the input. As the trip gets closer, I might give this a bump with another question or two

Downtown try Cowboy Star for steak and Cafe Chloe for French Bistro.

Agree with Patrick on these two things fosho Neighborhood has damn good burgers and Roppongi is quite tasty as well

I eat at WineSellar & Brasserie every time I’m in San Diego (though it has probably been a year, now). High-end, great food (the tuna tartare is one of my favorite things ever), great wine (you can buy in the shop if you’d like), but one of the weirdest locations in history - in an industrial park in Mira Mesa. But a fine, fine place.

I’ve also always loved Milles Fleurs in Rancho Santa Fe - though haven’t been in a few years. The drive is nice and you get to see how the other half lives.

Chris, the whole staff took off for greaner pastures 8 mo or so ago. Chef, GM, Maitr d, and a server or two. Their new home is Paon in Carlsbad.

Thanks, Otto - good to know. How’s Paon?

Chris, it is at the same level as the old WS&B, after all same Chef and personnel. I think that some of the people that moved got a piece of the action. That’s always a good incentive to perform. Also they have a superb location in the Carlsbad Village area, so lots of tourists and traffic. I wish I could visit more often, but for me it’s like a 1hr drive.

Otto, Any opinion on how the Wine Sellar and Brasserie is after the changes?

Patrick, have not visited the place since the change. Maybe just because of my love for the old employees. I would suspect that they are quite good.

When I read your first reply I was thinking you meant that the staff of Milles Fleurs had the big turnover - not WSB. Wow! Now that’s a big deal.
