SacBee: Dunne On MarcoCappelli

Very interesting article on MarcoCappelli by MikeDunne in today’s SacBee:

I have, of course, followed MarcCappelli from the very start at SwansonVnyds. Not much interested in the Cabs, but when he started making Syrah (from the same vnyd that ClarkeSwanson bought out from under SeanThackery, who was making his iconic Orion from), I was blown away by it. Huge/intense fruit w/o the Thackerey eucalyptus terroir.
When Marc moved up to ElDorado, I was expecting him to make a big splash (big fish in a small pond), but he’s been staying pretty much under the radar. He’s winemaker at Miraflores (I need to try their wines) and content to farm the HerbertVnyd, who used to sell Zin to JohnMacCready/SierraVista.
But it’s nice to get an update on Marc. I need to visit him up there sometime.

Thanks for the link, Tom. I was at Miraflores back in late November (notes coming on Grape-Nutz.com before too long), and I visited there a few years back as well. Have not met Marco yet, but I’ve emailed back and forth with him and hope to visit with him at the winery one of these days. The wines are good, and I thought the dessert wines were real standouts. Can’t wait to try his upcoming Angelica…been thinking about making one myself.

I tasted at Miraflores during Passport a couple of years ago and again at the pickup party and they are in the top tier in El Dorado for Syrah and Zinfandel.
