Sabre-ing Champagne

So I’ve decided that during the next week or so, it’s time to take my son’s well balanced and real Ninja sword and see whether it can be used to open a champagne bottle. I’ve seen the videos on Youtube but I’m sure there are useful recommendations (and a lot of useless bad jokes) that I might get from this crew of experts in the art of excessive alcohol consumption. So what would you recommend? Note that there are a number of active posters who live nearby that I could use for practice, but I think the best choice may be to drive a few miles north and see if I can sabre the top off with sufficient speed that it will embed itself in the exterior wall of a wine shop that refuses to use Jay Miller shelf talkers.

#1: Get the neck as cold as possible - put it upside-down in an ice bucket for 20+ minutes.

#2: Forget the live (sharp) sword - you’re more likely to cut a body part off. Use a heavy knife - strike with the spine of the blade (blunt side). I use a meat cleaver at home.

#3: find the seam on the bottle and hit the neck on that side.

Have fun! The most important part is #1 - a room temp bottle will more than likely just shatter in your hand!

Yup! Couldn’t have said it better myself!

Can you take a picture of Dan’s reaction? [rofl.gif]

Seriously though, don’t use a sharp sword, it will more than likely just cause damage to the blade.

Sabering Champagne is over. Now it’s all about the Movia underwater disgorgement.

I like the shoe method.

There was a long thread on eBob a few years ago about this, including a discussion of a guy in the NYC area who did serious damage to himself. A friend of mine witnessed that and said it wasn’t pretty. (I think the guy ended up in ER.) I suggest you find out what that guy did and make sure you don’t do it.

I saw an irishman sabre a bottle with the base of a champagne flute–I won’t say more, as it will lead to injury, but it is possible.

I wish I had a camera going!

Another vote supporting the neck needs to be as cold as possible and to run your blade along the seem of the bottle. Have fun and let us know how it works out!
