David, I’ve been in Anacortes, too. In fact I was part of a Vancouver company for almost 25 years. Our factory was in Kelowna-and this dates to 1990 when there were only a handful of wineries there. I even proposed marriage on one knee in the middle of the Capilano bridge. You live in what I honestly believe is the most beautiful city on earth.
Ditto from me (one of the “offenders” from upstream ). If you like the wine, great! There is a wide variety of tastes in wine.
Not to beat a dead horse, but when you post something super enthusiastic about a wine, and then complain shortly afterwards that no one responded, it sounds suspicious. We’ve seen a lot of shilling here. But now you made clear that you have no connection to the wine other than enjoing it, which is fine. Happy New Year!
Thanks a lot for the recommendations. I’m going to seek these out. I’m glad your thread kept getting bumped, even by people with almost zero interest in wines like these.
Ian’s post was very helpful in allowing me to understand the reaction I received. I had not thought about that at all when I originally started this thread but now fully understand that there could be and was a different perspective of what I wrote. I really should have expressed myself differently.
Thanks for pointing out a couple of interesting wines.
I did some searching for the Woodinville cabernet, and found this in a February 2016 newsletter from Compass wines. Is there any more information about this wine being preferred over Screaming Eagle in a blind tasting? They don’t really say much in the description.
Woodinville Wine Cellars
‘Reserve’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 $50.99
Sean Boyd does not make this wine every year, so when he
does, one needs to take notice. Full of power and muscle, it
also does it with layers of dark chocolate, cassis and fine grained
tannins. It has been nicknamed ‘the Eagle Eater’ for the third
time for good reason. Who needs Napa?
And I’m sorry if I was a bit snarky with you. I am sure this is a marvelous Cabernet for the money, but the last three California vintages have seen an overload of great Cabernet coming out of California - especially in this style - the new QUILT from Joe Wagner for example. Just a ton of great juice out there…
Tried the wine last night and a massive fruitbomb it is indeed. I was actually surprised at how much RS it had, it almost reminded me of a full bodied version of a Justin cab. I feel like there are plenty of wines out there of this quality in its price range but I will probably be picking up a few more because I love these types of wines. If it wasn’t for this this thread I probably wouldn’t have given this wine a shot so thanks Joe!
One thing I just thought about that I don’t quite understand is. This stackhouse wine was rated as the best value red by Parker, but he also rated the 2014 Louis Martini AV cab 97 points which is pretty much in the same price point as the stackhouse.
Ian summed up my initial reaction. I’m one of those who used to find Parker useful but now find most wines that he gives high scores to be over the top. And I could kind of tell I wouldn’t like this wine.
Lots of posts here – particularly tasting notes – drew few responses, or only draw responses after several days. When OPs bump their own posts up, it kind of looks like self-promotion.
I really appreciate that you’ve gone back and can see how those posts might have set off the reaction. And it’s nice that so many people here say they overreacted. A rare case of civility prevailing after a dustup here! We suffer a lot of train wrecks here. It isn’t often that the locomotive gets put back on the rails!
We have done 4 blind tastings with Screaming Eagle: 1997 with a bunch of 1997 cult wines and it won, then 2007, 2008 and 2009 blind head to head with a lesser known Washington cab, Woodinville Wine Cellars Reserve and the Eagle has been shot down each time. To my mailing list, the Woodinville Reserve Cab is now known as the ‘Eagle Eater’. The guy that brings the Eagle each time is getting a little frustrated about it, so to dominate the Washington wine after the most recent comparison (2009 Screaming Eagle vs. 2012 Woodinville Wine Cellars Reserve Cabernet), he pulled out a 2005 La Mission Haut Brion. He won that round, but considering the Washington Cab is a totally unknown wine in the industry that sells for $50, a $500 Parker 100 point Bordeaux had better beat it!
Woodinville also had a serious sale this time last year where they sold this for $40 including shipping. Given the quote (s) above we bought a case of this blind. We took delivery a week later and sat sipping, stupified that it was so good for the price. After an hour or more we had a serious discussion of what kind of numerical rating we would give it and all three of us thought 97 or 98 points. I picked up the phone and called Woodinville. We bought two more cases.
But there is more to this story. A couple of days later I received an e-mail telling me that the wine had been shipped. Fed Ex Ground with a tracking number. Curious, I looked at a national weather report and noted that there was a blizzard at that very moment in Idaho and Wyoming. Our wine was on a truck which had apparently stopped in a small town somewhere in one of these states for more than a day. Accuweather told me it was 8 degrees with a sustained 30 mile an hour wind, gusting to 50 or more.
We had a thousand dollars of wine on that truck. And it wasn’t moving. Just sitting with howling wind and drifting snow. I met Sean Boyd on the phone that night (three hour time difference) and he reassured me that he had shipped wine before through very cold weather and it had survived the trip. Still, I thought about the truck, stopped probably in a rest area off of an interstate highway that was impassable.
I remember opening a second bottle that night. Ended up taking aspirin from the headache and worried for the next week until it finally showed up.
I cannot tell you the anticipation of opening either case. And, a bottle had to be opened. The wine was cold but still, had the 24 bottles survived the trip?
The bottle that I opened last night (and noted earlier in this thread) was from that case. It has aged beautifully. For the Fed Ex driver who spent a night in a rest area on a Wyoming/Idaho highway I just want him to know that whatever he went through was for a good cause: me.
Following are Robert Parker’s comments for the 3 greatest wine values of the year. He notes that all are under $20 which is simply not true for the Stackhouse.
Top 3 Greatest Value Wines of the Year
All of the following wines are under $20 a bottle and represent fabulous bargains:
Joe: Happy New Year to you and yours! If you post here infrequently then you probably did not realize that many “old timers” on this Board came here after being dissed (by Mr. Parker) and/or banned from his Board. He is not terribly popular around here. We have also seen a quite a bit of blatant shilling over the years. Your post may have unintentionally triggered a ton of bad vibes although not really directed at you but rather RP.
If you stick around, you will find that the majority of posters here are simply passionate winos and you just need to develop a slightly thicker skin!
