Riverain: Discussing the wines, winemaker, owners, and anything else of interest

Case of 18 reserve and 16 cab arrived. I am going to have to crack one of each soon just to compare. But while I wait I opened a 14…love these wines!

I did get an e-mail saying they have 750’s of the pinot available so I said what the hell and decided to grab a few…

Odd, I did not get the offer e-mail, although I can see the allocation if I log on. I wouldn’t have known to check except for this thread.

Finally ran into the bison reserve! Cool label.

The people at the table next to us were drinking a Riverain, how funny is that. We shared this bottle with them as Steve knew them.

Blind; I thought this might be a grenache from sqn. The reason being is this was in a flight with two enormous Schrader cabs so I thought the entire flight might have been sqn wines. and this came across much more approachable.

I enjoyed this one much more than the Schrader cabernets. There’s a sweet cassis and dark fruit, noticeable oak influence on the attack which turns to a dried powdered milk chocolate note at the finish. This was my favorite of the flight.

This flight set the record for the most amount of glass used to produce three bottles of wine. It was comical.

Just opened a bottle of 2018 Riverain Cabernet
2 hours of air. Sipping for next 4.
Good wine. Lots in there. Needs more time.

Didn’t they just go public this week? …oh yeah, wrong Rivian!

Popped the 2018 Tench Reserve Cab for Christmas.

H O L Y S H I T!

What a wine!!!

I plan to add as much Riverain to the cellar as I can.

They really do make a great wine. I found Riverain from Berserkerday in 2019 (bought the 2016) and have bought every year since on Berserkerday. Discounts aren’t big anymore and prices have been hiked but it’s still fair. It’s actually the only wine I will keep buying >$100 given how much inventory I have thanks to de Negoce. I have no other mailing list I buy from >$100 anymore.

Yeah, prices have increased and it’s still a very reasonable high Napa cab. For the record I don’t buy any cab over $100 a bottle. LOL

Steve has been very generous to the WB community, he released wine to berserkerday before his own mailing list. That was a big call and reflects the importance of WB to the winemaker community. It can’t last forever so enjoy while we can.

Anybody else had the 2014 lately? I popped a bottle before the holidays, and it was kinda thin, almost dried out. Hoping it was just off.

Has anyone tried the ‘18 Silver Eagle Pinot Noir? I bought my Step-Daughter and Son-In Law a mag for Christmas hoping it would be a winner. Any thoughts?

Sounds like it was off. I’ll send you a new one soon.

This would benefit from a 2-3 hour decant.

Thanks!

Thanks Steve, I’ll pass along!

Has anyone had any “aged” Riverain recently. I have Tench from 2012, 2013 and 2016. Not a lot of age, but more than most. Not a lot of recent notes and you can’t trust FMIII any more since he went over to the dark side and like pinot.

2012 is really nice right now

2019 Cab offer is out for those of us that missed out on the BD offer. Pretty significant price bump from last year ($110 → $150), those of you that got in on the BD offer got a great deal.

We are very excited about our latest offering, our flagship 2019 Cabernet from the Tench Vineyard in Oakville. We are absolutely thrilled with the quality of this vintage, as a long uneventful growing season allowed for copious hang time and a vin de garde.

We especially like this vintage for aging. It bookends nicely with the flamboyant 2018s. We took some time to taste a few bottles of the 2019 over several days. Our first impression was this reminded us of the 2016 version, pretty high on the power scale, but with that extra delineation and length we are always looking for. 2019 was a Goldilocks year weather wise. No big heat spikes, no cold spells and a slightly under average size crop. Inky dark color, blackberry, iron, cassis and hints of tilled earth on the nose and in the glass. The mild season provided big velvety tannins that arrive late on the palate and there is plenty of Eastern Oakville acid. The balance and the length are what we like best. Mostly Darnajou, Taransaud and Baron cooperage. Definitely decant for early drinking and this should be a long ager

Jeb Dunnuck’s review seems to agree:

I was able to taste two wines from Riverain, both from the Tench Vineyard in Oakville. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard is rock-solid, with classic red, blue, and black fruits as well as notes of iron, rosemary, and leather. It’s focused, medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and nicely structured on the palate. I like it today, but the cellar is going to be your friend as well. 95+ points.

I was at work during BD and missed out on the Riverain BF deal. Pesky work getting in the way…need it to pay the bills though.
