+1. Having tasted and dined with Richard on numerous occasions, I can assure you he is one of the nicest guys you will meet, absolutely has a brilliant sense of humor, and deserves none of the ridicule here or elsewhere. He has always been a good note-taker during tastings, and I guess just decided to push that interest to a more serious level. Good for him, those who appreciate it should read and follow his notes and bloggings, those who don’t should find something else to do, without launching silly attacks.
Frankly, I think being able to describe the flavors and aromas in a wine is quite useful. I often reach for a descriptor I can’t find, and applaud Richard for looking to broaden his tasting and descriptive skills.
Cheers,
Alan
I have no idea what this means
Are we talking about the sous bois of Piedmont or Tompkins Square Park?
Hmmm…lots of fun. ![cheers [cheers.gif]](/uploads/db3686/original/2X/0/0ff9bfcdb0964982cd3240b6159868fbdf215b1a.gif)
the Board has been quite quiet for sometimes and I love it…
Maybe the time stamp on his post is off but looks like 250am my time.
Posting while intoxicated
OK I’ve read all the responses. I think Bill’s original post was way too personal and mean and hurtful as phrased. I think that if a non-wine-writer had said he was trying an experiment by tasting five kinds of pears to see if he could then discern more nuances in a wine with a pear flavor, Bill would not have written the same post. The fact that Richard writes about wine publicly seems to give Bill license not to treat him like a human being.

If Richards is anything like what Alan said ( see below ); maybe Richards is having fun and enjoying the attention - no ?

It’s a strange sort of disorder…
Ah. He is supposedly in Italy
Then he is cranky in the morning
Uh, what Berry said. What did Richard do to this guy, run over his dog?
Hopefully Richard has missed this thread…can’t say it’s served any purpose other than to insult an excellent wine reviewer (whether you agree with his or any other reviewer’s methodology). If you have to resort to hyperbole, insults and worse to make a point then either the point isn’t worth making, or you aren’t the person to make it
Bill-cranky-yes. PWI? No. Not a drop. Cranky in Italy, where it was afternoon while posting. Increasingly cranky as dinnertime approached. The time stamps must come from Australia or something…

I have the same reaction as a lot of posters. This thread makes me really uncomfortable. Sick to my stomach actually. I don’t see the point of mocking someone even if their approach to wine and tasting differs from your own. Frankly, I think it’s pretty disgusting that Richard has effectively been attacked and driven from this board.
PWI: Pears With Intent.
Were you abused by a pear as a child?
If Bill acts like a child, he should be treated as a child. He needs some “Time Out”. Perhaps a ban of a month might teach him some manners?
