For sh*ts and grins I went to the Rhys website today to check availability. Everything but the Sonoma Coast is sold out. Congrats to Kevin and Jeff and crew for another successful release.
I just got an updated invoice from Rhys and I was granted 1 of the 2 bottles of Chardonnay I wish-listed. This is my first bottle of their Chardonnay - I am very pleased about getting one.
If anyone got a notifier email that they would be getting bottles and hasn’t yet received an updated order confirmation, just drop us a line at info@rhysvineyards.com. There were a few that got hung up at various stages, or the email could have been lost to spam filters, but they should have gone out by now.
How long are you guys going to hold on to the 08 SVD Pinots before you drink them? This is only my second year of receiving offers, so I don’t have a lot of experience with them outside of my wine group. My limited experience with them shows that they need time; so I wasn’t going to touch them for several years. thoughs?
I’ll listen to what Kevin and Jeff say and probably hold them for a couple years…well, that is until people start posting glowing TNs on here, at which point I cave and crack a bottle of the Family Farm and maybe an Alpine. I know, I’m weak.
I only grabbed four Alesia since I focused as much as my budget on Rhys as possible. I really like the Sonoma Coast, but with the allocations a bit larger this year, I killed my budget (and then some) on Rhys.
Ross,
“When to drink” questions are very difficult to answer because we all have different tastes and objectives when we open a bottle. For example, I have been opening the '08s now, but I am known baby-killer and don’t mind youthful tannin. In general, I think our wines really benefit from a year or two in bottle (4 years from vintage) but continue to improve after that. If I had just a single bottle of one of our vineyard designates and wanted to open it at the perfect time, I would wait at least 6 years and probably 10 from the vintage date. Meanwhile, all of our wine have begun to drink well 2 years after release (or 4 years from the vintage) especially with decanting.
Danny,
It’s hard to generalize about our Alpine Chardonnay. Some vintages drink well young and some need some time. I have noticed that people have enjoyed even the more ageworthy vintages (like '07) shortly after release.
FWIW, I think the '08 will drink well right away but it will also improve for many years.
