Reyneke Reserve 2003

Reyneke Reserve 2003
Shiraz
Stellenbosch, SA
14%. Bio-dynamic winery.

We got three of these as a gift about 5 years ago. The wine has developed beautifully since.

Delicious! Smooth, deep, balanced, profound with velvety plum, and a hint of pepper and spices. Reminiscent of a Northern Rhone.
The last bottle, just the other day reached the stratosphere. Unbelievably good. A really great wine, elegant yet powerful.

wow! quite surprised to see this note - reyneke is quite obscure even in south africa. their entire range is great. am assuming they were brought from south africa ?

Having tried several of the more recent vintages, I’ve found them to be pretty strong performers recently. All organic as well, if I recall correctly.

No they were a gift from my sister in Eugene OR, who knows someone that sells (or maybe imports, I forget) them.

We also had the Cornerstone 2001 Stellenbosch (a 1/2 Cab. S, 1/4 Shiraz, 1/4 Merlot blend) but it was not as good (tho to be fair, it was rather astringent, but that was about 8 years ago and maybe it would have calmed down by now).

IIRC the winery is all organic.

Welcome to Wine Berserkers, Justin, hope you enjoy it here!

didn’t know they were imported into the US - great to know. have not tried the cornerstone but their sauvignon blanc is pretty good too. thanks for the note on the 2003 reserve - i brought a bottle back from south africa which i drank 2 or 3 years ago and remember thinking at the time that i was too early…

Better late than never, thanks for the welcome!

Remembered this thread earlier today when I saw that Wine Enthusiast nominated Reyneke for New World winery of the year… A grain of salt is probably required here… but I think any positive publicity for those that approach their wine in the right way is a great thing.

Interestlng. IMO they certainly deserve a boost!
