After being away for a while (trip, vacation, etc…)
What are some of the first things that you have to have (that you couldn’t get on vacation) once you get back?
One of the first meals back for me (normally, the first, mostly because its on the way from the airport to the house) is a Chicken Calzone from Mellow Mushroom. There is just something about this that is so rewarding once I get back home.
Burgers are always a good choice as is Chick-fil-a
a few pints at Barley John’s. They are a tiny little brew-pub, and they make some of the best beer I’ve ever had. Awesome porter, IPA, and brown ale (which is called the “Wild Brunette” – it’s brewed with wild rice). each year they also take their porter - “Old 8 Porter”, so named b/c it’s 8%abv – and age it in used bourbon barrels — the resulting product is ridiculously good!
It depends where I am coming from. Being Filipino, I tend to eat more rice - though I don’t have it with every meal, I am accustomed to having rice with a meal once a day at least.
If coming from anywhere in Asia where there is rice available anywhere, I don’t get a chance to miss it at all.
If coming from the US, I don’t really get to miss it either as there are always Asian restaurants somewhere and because, more often than not, my trip will include a week or so at my sister’s home in the US where they serve rice regularly.
But, when coming from Europe (where I normally spend 3 weeks or more at a time whenever there), I come home craving rice - specifically a Filipino breakfast that involves garlic-fried rice, a couple of eggs and some form or combination of fried meat, local spicy pork sausage, dried fish or dried squid (the picture below is an example with fried strips of marinated beef). I always wind up arriving in Manila early in the morning, so I call home from the airport and have them prepare a Filipino breakfast for me so it is ready the moment I arrive.
There is a little pizzeria up the street from here that makes a ridiculously good broccoli rabe and garlic pizza. It’s tough to find a pizza joint that keeps broccoli rabe on hand, but these guys treat it right (olive oil, garlic, hot pepper, sauteed) and put it on a really good crust.
The garlic aroma is still on you three days later.
I tend to travel through Europe a lot, and it’s hard finding really good sushi over there unless I’m willing to spend serious Euros, which I’m not. Here in NYC, plenty of places to get great sushi, so it’s one of the first things I go to when I get back.
