Retailer Check: Leon & Son

Deleted this thread

I bought some Rousseau from them and it was delivered when I requested.

I’ve had excellent experiences with them.

Never had a problem with them, but they are local so no experience with shipping really.

You should specify which one. There are two - Grand Rapids and Brooklyn. There isn’t a commercial relationship between the two though.

I’ve dealt and continue to deal with both quite a bit. Overall happy. That said, the Brooklyn one has had some staff changes and/or disruption recently. Sorry to hear it has gotten to the level of dysfunction you are experiencing. I hope they can get right again.

Great shop in absolute chaos right now…
same experience… ordered 3 btls… asked if i can order 9 other btls and get case discount.

sure can! send the 9 u want in!

ok… 6 weeks… 5 email and 4 calls later… i just had the original 3 shipped b/c the 9 never got processed… 2 btls were sold/gone… no response… person out… email in spam… person on the phone who says they’ll call me back didn’t… even sent in 2 more btls to replace the 2 that were gone… silence again… no response… person out… repeat… LOL

Buying wine just shouldn’t be this hard… [truce.gif]

great operation when it works… but they took over a new warehouse or something and things are an absolute $hit show… I wouldn’t hesitate to buy again but definitely just straight forward buy/ship type of transaction.

I chuckled at the “no control over the warehouse” comment. Wa???

Reminds me of my last order from Schrader (long time ago). I get charged multiples of what their order form says shipping costs will be. Call them, and their response is “we have nothing to do with that”. Wa? “But I checked it off on YOUR order form!” “Not our problem” And so on. She was not friendly about it, and I quickly became the same.

I’ve got nothing but good things to say about the Michigan location, but I’m doing local pick up.

Bought a bottle from the Brooklyn one, then I was emailed to say they didn’t have what was on the website. Refunded without a problem but annoying/disappointing when places don’t have what their websites say.

Had good experiences but always had the bottles delivered to NYC, so can’t comment on shipping

Love that shop. Prices not the cheapest, but the service + selection + knowledge are worth it.

I live in NYC, so no idea about shipping.

Haven’t been there in a while, so no idea about recent chaos either.

I believe they are actually related. I forget the actual story but I believe the NY store owner’s son married someone in MI and decided to open a store there. Great selection and beautiful store.

I’ve had nothing but great experiences with the Grand Rapids store, which is my go to wine store (I live in central MI). I only ever do pickup though.

Love the Brooklyn shop. Have ordered from them several times.

Adding to or changing orders with any system can be a pain, especially if the initial order is transmitted to fulfillment immediately after purchase.

I got my last D&R from there.

I saw the good reviews here for Leon & Son, but had the most interesting experience today…

I ordered 4 bottles of burgundy today. The website clearly states “All “Ground Shipping” orders placed after 12pm on Wednesdays will be shipped on Monday the following week.” However, they shipped my order today to Chicago and I’m a little concerned as the Midwest is having a bit of a heatwave this weekend.

From the customer service rep:

Thanks for your email reply!

I would like to explain the shipping process.

The one explained on the website which is due for shipping next Monday are orders that are ONLY placed every Wednesdays beyond 12PM.

According to that logic, if I place an order via ground to California on a Thursday, they may still ship it on a Friday. I’m sure this is an honest mistake and the wine will “probably” be fine, but it was wine I planned on aging at least 10 years before drinking. Should I just let this go or really push for new wine to be sent and the original shipment returned?

Chicago forecast says 78F high, think you’ll be ok.

They’ve held orders for me but I’ve specifically requested they do it.

Shipping on Thursday is my preference cross country.

I’ll echo the experiences above. They have some really good stuff, prices can be high on some bottles, very good on others. But their operations are all over the place. I’ve only ordered a few times from them, but they’ve screwed every single order in one way or another. Always kind by email or on the phone, but they are disorganized. Their website is kind of a mess too. But if you have patience, there is some great stuff to be had from them.

With respect to the Brooklyn shop, they ran a very large sale in March that seems to have added to the chaotic experience. But it seems like a quality shop with a nice selection, and doing more volume than they are equipped to manage isn’t necessarily a bad thing if they staff up and iron out the wrinkles. I would be happy to order again, personally, although probably for smaller orders until things are running a little bit smoother.

I’m a retailer and my dad’s name is Leon. They sound awesome!
