Red wine fights weight gain

Wine enthusiasts will find extra benefit in a regular glass of Merlot beyond post-work relaxation. A new study conducted by Purdue University and published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry suggests red wine may help fight obesity.

What is it with us backwards Americans? We’re always looking for something we can consume to fight weight gain. What really fights weight gain is not consuming. Maybe wine won’t be the first thing off my list when I try to lose weight, but the way this is phrased makes you think that if you guzzle wine on top of everything else you eat, the pounds will just melt away. I’m thinking not so much.

Not drinking too much along with exercise and not snacking during the day and evening keeps the weight under control. Calories in and calories out is the only solution.

Yup. And wine most certainly does count as “calories in”.

Im proof against this claim

My experience would also indicate otherwise. Nothing like a good red wine with a little acidic zip to get the salivary glands going and make me hungry.

IIRC a bottle of red wine is like 800 calories

But I’ll drink more wine to see if it that’s why it’s not working.

More like 500, if we’re talking Burgundy. Yet another reason to drink Burgundy. [snort.gif]

Yep. Exactly what I always say. The math is simple. You can make a lot of headway just by cutting out excess portions, junk snacks and exercising a bit. A few hundred calories per day net reduction as part of your lifestyle gets you there slow and steady.

And yet people still like the crash diets, gadgets and fads which inevitably lead to yo-yoing weights because they don’t really change lifestyle.

Are you my long-lost twin?
