Recommendations on a good chef's knife?

I’d like to get a good, solid chef’s knife but not pay more than about $60-75… any reccos?

You should be able to find a nice Henkel 4 or 5 star (based on your preference of handles) in that range, especially if you have a 20 percent off coupon from bed bath and beyond… If you haven’t used one, I would suggest a Santuko style with a granton edge…one of my favorite all purpose chef’s knives…

If you don’t mind a stamped blade (and Cook’s Illustrated rates them highly), they also have a full line of Forschner/Victorinox at reasonable prices.

I’m not a fan of Henckel, myself. Not enough curvature to the blade on the chef’s knives.

I love my Shun Ken Onion Santoku. Although more like $125 on sale. Perfect balance and draw. I also have an unused Shun Classic 8 inch Chef that was purchased for $90. A bit lighter in weight, but nice as well.

I have several Shun classics (IIRC). Sur La Table has been running some pretty good sales on knives and you may be ablve to find a santoku in your price range or close to it.

At this price, it’s a no brainer. I have had mine for several years and have zero complaints.

I have both Wustof Tridents and Shun Kaji knives. I love them both.

You will find at your local TJMaxx many shun knives. At least they show up here in Albuqurque and at my parent’s in KY. Ken Onion and Classic series.

The trick is to open the box at TJMaxx, it recloses without any indications/damage so there is no problem here. Most are 100% perfect, maybe just a slight blemish on the handle. BFD. But I saw one with a bent tip. No doubt it was rejected by the higher end stores, as it should be, and rejected by you and me. But of the rest I’ve found them to require 5-10 minutes of examination before I could find anything wrong with them, and then it is an off color in one spot somewhere. BFD again.

I’ll gladly keep an eye out if you tell me what size you want.
