Hi all,
Wife’s family is doing a river cruise from Mainz to Nuremberg / Munich this summer. We would like to tack on a day or two at the beginning of the trip and maybe visit some German wineries. Does anyone here have recommendations for a day trip that could take six people into wine country from there?
I’m also considering a train trip to Strasbourg for a couple days, but I’m not sure if the grandparents are up for all that extra travel (there’s a reason they liked the cruise option).
As noted by @Mikael_OB, Frankfurt is very close to wine country. I fly in there for work and take the train to wine villages before getting down to business. Just choose your favorite producer(s), within 45-120 minutes of Frankfurt you have many options.
And depending on your transportation preferences, very easy by train. Then potentially taxi from train station if crew is not up for a walk/bus, depending on exact location of winery.
Before I was in to wine and kind of start of the exploration when I was more focused on red wines I quite frequently travelled for work around the Frankfurt region. Missed opportunity! Working on getting new business reason to travel there
I go many places that are more ‘interesting’ and more ‘beautiful’ than Frankfurt/Mannheim. But, every place has its benefits and wine country proximity is definitely one there!
Is Donnhoff by appointment like most of the other Weingut? I will be in Mainz in March and fancied a visit to Eltville to see Weil and JB Becker, but I do love me some Donnhoff and due to the connection through Weisbaden the time spent isn’t too different between the two.
Somewhat on topic, there is an episode of Samantha Brown’s places to love you should watch. It was Frankfurt, Mainz and two other nearby cities whose names escape me. It looked really beautiful and there were probably some good sightseeing tips if interested. She even went to a winery!
Thanks all – a lot of good stuff here. Talking with the family, we might extend even farther and do a couple days in Strasbourg and backtrack through Germany before the cruise. Not a lot of time to explore Alsace and Mosel, but this will be an appetizer trip for future years
