Recent wines including a 47 Chateauneuf

  • 2001 Domaine de Courcel Pommard Les Vaumuriens - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard (11/3/2013)
Quite developed and forward with plenty of earth and decaying leaves on the nose coupled with some sweet red berry fruits. It has an upfront sweetness and flesh in the mouth followed by some blocky Pommard tannins on the back-end. Length is decent.
  • 2008 Mount Mary Triolet - Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley (11/2/2013)
Some fruit action that borders on the exotic, think rockmelon and feijoa. There are some grass and mineral notes and it is a wine of good texture and precision. The finish is clean and crisp.
  • 2009 Olivier Leflaive Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru (11/2/2013)
Ripe berry and cherry fruits have a light floral edge. It is luscious and creamy in the mouth like so many 09 reds. It has a kiss of minerality to the finish.
  • 2011 Benjamin Leroux Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Embazées - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru (11/2/2013)
Full and generous, crammed with orchard fruits. There’s a solid mineral base and some honeysuckle floral notes that pop up once the wine takes on a bit of air.
  • 2009 Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru (11/1/2013)
Plenty of struck match to the aroma. This wine possesses the most pure of white peach aromas and flavours. It is rich and sappy and crammed with minerals. It has great shape and terrific intensity. The finish is loaded with a big puff of chalk and drives on hard and long.
  • 1947 Père Anselme Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (10/31/2013)
Quite a punchy nose lifted by balsamic volatility. It smells of raisins, chocolate, coffee, leather and earth. It is sweet and vinous in the mouth with all sorts of interesting savoury nuances. Acidity has all but disappeared but it remained fresh right through the bottle.

Great notes Jeremy - I also think highly of the '09 H.Boillot Mouchere! Love the note on the '47 Anselme - see below for the note from a bottle that I had with Harry Karis. Special stuff - this '47 was FABULOUS!!

1947 Mahler Besse Chateauneuf du Pape: Note from Harry, “extremely rare bottle, only a few left in the world”. Darkened up as it sat in the glass. Secondary and tertiary notes of old leather, sois bois, touches of fresh herbs, with flashes of very charming earth toned black cherry and soft raspberry. This was amazing to try especially with the provenance - a once in a lifetime wine for me probably.
