Recent white burgundy vintage experiences

2020 Chablis, kicking sand in the face of 2019…

Also, the Dauvissat may have been advanced. I didn’t love it.

From CT: “Biggish, honeyed; touch of baking spices.
Cannot tell if this is a little advanced for its young age, or its the vintage. Maybe a little of both.
Just ok, but not the chiseled glass of stones I go to a Chablis for, let alone le Clos.

In fact I didn’t love it enough that I put an ice cube in it. Don’t hate on me now: it’s August in Georgia! You need a snorkel to go outside…

Well, I know photos can be unreliable but that colour does not look right

Opened one of these 2017 Jean-Marc Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet Les Baudines, and damn it was good.

I have looked for this off and on and can never find it (not the 2017 - just any vintage) and I am not convinced it even exists haha

The only other producer I know of who makes a Clos Saint-Marc - because we sell it - is Olivier Leflaive from their Récolte du Domaine series. It’s a lovely wine!

FWIW, I’ve only seen this at auction and then only sporadically. Like so much in the wine world and beyond, prices have skyrocketed (~2x) for this producer.

I bought a few 17 JM clos st marc 3 to 4 years ago. I had a bottle 1.5 years ago and it was the best chardonnay ive ever had. Ive looked online and havent found any 17s since. I think you can find recent vintages but they are in the 250s.

Ya not much out there. They sell in the 200s now.

In case you don’t visit the Bouzereau thread: real good wines here-’23 is fleshy, supple fruit, concentrated - rather young. But a lot in store.

Pretty excellent villages level wine.

Thought of this with the recent offer from the Wine Club for the 2018. Pricing is a bit. . . different

Checking old mails, the 2016 Meix Cadot VV was offered at 35 eur. But that was my ABC phase and instead I went for the NSG Clos Argillieres at 54. If I knew back then what I know now …

Not that long ago I purchased the 2014 Meix Cadot VV from a retailer for 79€. Because of a couple of CT notes I’m rather scared to open it though, but at least I didn’t overpay.

Opened a '21 then a '22 Jean Javillier Meursault Tillets last night. Both premoxed already and poured down the drain. It’s safe to say the white wines from Javillier should be avoided completely. I have a '22 Meursault Poruzots in the fridge to see if it’s shot too. Thankfully only a few bottles of these left. 100% premox rate for me on this producer’s whites.

Write them at contact@patrickjavillier.com. Ask them how they will make this right for you. Give them your Venmo or PayPal. Complain! Don’t let it slide. The wine industry’s attitude on flawed bottles is deplorable.

Different producer but thank you.

I’ve been lucky enough to drink Raveneau three times in the last couple of months. They all seem to need several hours in the glass to really achieve that quality that we all look for with this producer.

Finally the gunflint, lime, apricot and long finish, I had hoped for

Coffinet-Duvernay Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Morgeot Les Fairendes 2023

Pure fruit here, density but not what I’d expect with Morgeot plus the vintage. Well balanced, long finish, enough acidity to keep things honest. Very saline and that subtle bitter note I find in many good white burgundies. With time, oak influence shows up but not overbearing. I bought more 3/4 of the way through, nice first experience with this producer.

2009 Carillon Puligny 1er Cru Referts: Deep colour, some caramelisation on the nose and palate. More brown sugar than brown apple, typical Referts salinity providing some balance. Good richness and length, definitely a more opulent vintage. Fully ready and don’t hang about.

2009 Fevre Chablis Crand Cru Les Clos: Served with the Carillon, so nobody even came close to guessing these were the same vintage. Much lighter colour. Deep nose with rock dust, citrus and orchard fruit. Not easy to pick Chablis on the palate, but certainly far more elegant than the Carillon. Good texture and great length. Ready, no rush.

2016 Vougeraie Bienvenue Batard Montrachet (Magnum): Relatively rich colour, some funk on the nose initially blew off. Good integration between reduction, fruit and oak, with that creamy richness that probably isn’t for everyone. Not blowsy or clunky in structure, but really resting on its fruit weight. Actually, some of the better quality fruit I’ve come across in 2016 - clean and ripe, no rough edges. Fully ready.
