Recent trip to NOLA

NOLA = Food Coma! Here’s a few more restaurant data points:

We had dinner at R’evolution ($50 corkage), Root ($25 corkage), and August (free corkage).

R’evolution food and service was top notch. Lots to choose from and maybe too many choices. Highly recommend Death by Gumbo (semi-boneless quail stuffed with andouille, oysters, and rice), beer battered crab beignets, and Espresso-crusted Venison Carpaccio. They make their own salumi which looked great but I didn’t get to try. Fish dishes are spectacular with the exception that the scallops were over-salted. One surprise is that they do not have a tasting menu per se but they are happy to create one for you based on menu selection discussion with server. I thought this was pretty cool. Definitely the meal of the trip.

Root has an interesting menu with 20 charcuterie items and 8 or 9 different sausages besides a regular menu. We did a bunch of the charcuterie and some of our favorites were the Truffle Scented Chicken Liver Parfait, “CBD” Chicken, Beef, Duck-Poached Ballotine, Chocolate Espresso Cured Lamb Lomo, and Szechuan Beef Tendon. They are opening a new place called Square Root soon that will strictly have only a 12 course tasting menu. I’m sure it will be worth checking out.

I was looking forward to August the most and probably my least favorite place of the dinners and lunches we had. The food was good (nothing spectacular) but seemed rushed with almost no break between courses. I can recommend the Trout with Pontchartrain sauce. Other than that the rest of what we had made me think that while all correct, it didn’t leave me wanting to return.

Lunches were at La Petite Grocerie, Bayona, and Herbsaint. All three were excellent and I couldn’t recommend one over another. Maybe Herbsaint gets the edge. Crispy Goat curry with lentils and the spaghetti with egg were so good. Bayona has a three course lunch on Saturdays for $25 labeled a “light lunch” which while not so light it can be a bit of a break and also allows you to eat more oysters before dinner time.

And since we needed more food, we had oysters at Casamentos, ACME, and Royal House. Oysters were pretty similar at all three but the ambience was a bit better at the first two.

and even with all the walking, the weight gain was…
sounds great paul. surprised to see such a lukewarm review of august.

Yeah, I need to go on a serious cleanse after every visit to NOLA. Love that town however.

Loved you FB photos Paul. You did it right in NOLA. Well done.

Mark, we walked 4 to 5 miles a day and I gained a pound a day. I don’t think you can break-even there.

Your visit to August was similar to my one visit. I’ll try again because of all the great reviews, but I’ve had many better meals in NO. I haven’t been to R’evolution yet but it’s on the top of my list for the next visit. You should have tried Stella but I know some of the reviews scared you off. Maybe we can get the guys together and do a few nights.

Thanks for the notes!

Did you try the Gulf snapper “courtbouillon” at August? That and the Banana Pudding were my favorite things when we ate there last month.

We’ll have to try R’evolution and Root on our next visit.

Jay, we did not try the snapper. We split the banana pudding which was good. There are so many places that I wanted to try but just not enough time.

Joe, we need to get together somewhere. I haven’t seen you and Don in a while.

Nice! We were just there in October and need to go back. Between our favorites and the new places plus the older places we have yet to try…

NOLA is just one of my absolute favorite cities!

Paul; Excellent notes and great FB pix…sorry you didn’t enjoy August more but overall you had a helluva trip. We need to try R’evolution next time as we stayed at the Royal Sonesta but just could not fit it in.

Marshall

went in January and recall:

Root for lunch = insanely good salad, weak entrees, spotty service
R’evolution dinner = $$$$ for the quality and service. Nice wine list though.
Cochon lunch = amazingly good rabbit and dumplings. very good roast oysters
Herbsaint dinner = excellent
Wayfare lunch= great sandwiches and booze
August= as you said, rushed and forgettable

Drinking @ French 75, Kingfish, and the bar @ the Modern on Lee Circle were all great.
SoBou- least favorite spot.
