No I don’t think so but I have both. Going through my archive 06 is less intense. Often Dujacs most powerful wine in my experience!!
Last Friday, a friend invited me over for dinner. He opened two wines: a 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin from Lucien Boillot and a 2018 Chinon Les Grézeaux from Bernard Baudry. We both agreed that the Baudry was the more impressive wine.
Missed getting a picture, sorry. We drank a 2008 Daniel Rion Beaux Monts, purchased shortly after release, sitting in the cellar ever since. We drank one about 9 months ago that was showing nicely on pop n’ pour, so decided to open this only about 15 min before dinner, pouring immediately into glasses to get things moving. Served alongside perfectly seared duck breast and Piedmont beans. This was the kind of wine that shines for being precisely what it should be, no more and no less. I understand and share the thrill when a wine overperforms, but I get a great deal of satisfaction from a wine doing exactly what I expect and want it to. In this case, somewhat rustic, lovely aromas, acid forward without losing balance. Lovely aromatics, very enjoyable on the palate, with extra complexity and class from the excellent 1er vineyard. I believe this is in the early stages of its ideal drinking window and will continue to improve for another few years, then hold for quite a while. I’ve said many times why we are fans of Rion, so don’t need to repeat it. So glad there are still producers like this.
The 2023 Vogue Musigny finally arrived, and in the interest of science, and taking one for the team, I decided to open one.
Well, it was superb; whether it was better than the 2022 I had, is incredibly difficult to figure out, not least because I tasted the 2022 around six months ago.But from memory, for two fairly ripe vintages, they both possess a tremendous amount of nervous energy, already showing a perfumed complexity, and an incredibly long finish.
I never tasted the great Vogues young, but tasted several mature bottles, and they are among the finest Burgundies I have tasted. Whether these will turn out as well is a bet I am prepared to take, so ended up buying more.
I had 2023, 2017, 2007, and 1996 Vogue Musigny at LP this year and the 2023 was just spectacular. All showed well, but the 2023 as you said was already so open, perfumed, and deep.
If I had the $$$ to fill a cellar with Vogue I would, the current winemaking there is exceptional.
Hope my CortonB…is reading.
Style is not substance; and substance is not style…no offense is intended. One needs to pay for what you wish to enjoy. We only live once.
Just in case someone…is news to this Board, may I repeat the followings ?
李白 ; once said :
See how the Yellow River’s waters move out of heaven.
Entering the ocean, never to return.
See how lovely locks in bright mirrors in high chambers,
Though silken-black in the morning, it has changed by night to snow.
…Oh, let a man of spirit venture where he pleases
And never tip his golden cup empty toward the moon!
Since heaven gave the talent, let it be employed!
Spin a thousand pieces of silver, all of them come back!
Cook a sheep, kill a cow, whet the appetite,
And make me, of three hundred bowls, one long drink!
…To the old master, Cen,
And the young scholar, Danqiu,
Bring in the wine!
Let your cups never rest!
Let me sing you a song!
Let your ears attend!
What a pleasure - an truly enormous if slightly simple village wine. After 1.5 hours open, the nose is detectable 18” away from the glass. As I was pouring it into the decanter the aromatics were explosive, just from the mouth of the bottle to the mouth of the decanter, overwhelming diffusion.
The palate is super silky and soft, after 90 mins in the glass melted the drying tannins away. While it’s soulful and satisfying isn’t exactly layers of kaleidoscopic flavor notes, but why would it be, this the lowest of four distinct village cuvees from this producer and I sure would like to try the other three! — 90 points
Trembling with excitement for the 2001 Roty Griotte Chambertin that I’ll be opening on Wednesday night.
I added notes on eight reds here:
If $500 bottles of wine don’t moisten your trousers, you might look to other places that you can allocate your dollars more effectively.
General statement, not directed to any particular individual.
Last nights 2012 Hudelot-Noellat Chambolle-Musigny was pretty, a little demure, and a bit Pinot lite.
Can you drink it without moistening your trousers if you paid 50$ for it way back when?
Olivier guyot gevrey champeaux 1er 2008
Everything I love about 2008. Acid spine that lifts gevrey to new heights. Never had this producer so only can opine on this bottle but this had feral gevrey red cherries with a nice bite on the finish. I expected this to be DOA but was a pleasant surprise. You do not want to know what I paid for it.
thread drift but baudry killed it in 2018.
JP — coming up big on the no-namer, God bless you good sir! I hope you and your family are having a lovely holiday weekend.
This was really wonderful. The Bachelet house style combined with the 2019 vintage is magic. Dark raspberry fruited with a touch of wood spice. Still somewhat tannic at first but on day two today it was so velvety. Great persistence. This would be fun to try again in 10 years or so.
So glad I just grabbed six packs of the 2015 and 2017!!
Coincidentally just did a few btl of 2023 and 1990 last night. 2023 Musigny again terrific. More approachable than 2022 to me (not here, tasted separately), which has a little more serious and stern at the moment. FYI the 23 Amoureuses has been stunning when have had it.
99 Combottes was fantastic yesterday. Agree it’s a powerful cuvée that deserves time. Right now everything one would hope for, a holistic package of floral, black cherry, earth. Near grand cru level depth and complexity, right in the zone now. Have had this a couple times last two years and consistently very good.
Thanks that sounds awesome. Just love 99s but my Dujacs from 99 are no longer. Last one that I had was the Morey 1er that was right in the zone a couple of years ago. We tasted 04s from Barrel at the Domaine and from the problematic vintage I thought the Combottes showed better than the Grand Crus that day.
2020 Lafouge Auxey-Duresses 1er La Chapelle (bottle on the Left)
Fresh red cherry/black cherry fruit, graphite, greenbriar, med grip, low-med acid. Delicious!
The label was a little beat up, so I had low-ish expectations when I tapped it during some recreational bottle sorting at the storage unit to beat the heat.
More fool me: Lafouge continues to make delicious, affordable, quality burgundy.
