We’re there over Christmas and booked Luke for dinner that night. Didn’t think we would appreciate somewhere like Antoines after a family Christmas lunch and Luke is near our hotel. Anyone been lately?
When I lived in New Orleans I used to love Moscas. A fifteen minute drive, a bit of a hole in the wall, and rumored to be partially owned by the Mafia, the food was insanely good, and the BBQ shrimp was far and away the best I tasted when I was down there, and I tried many, many restaurants. http://www.moscasrestaurant.com
Just back also really enjoyed Herbsaint, August was also good but not as good as Herbsaint. Compere Lapin was very good also but the service was a bit off. They did not seem happy when I sent back premoxed Burg.
Herbsaint was good and La Petit Grocery even better. Nice muffuletta at cochon butcher and a wild scene at Saturday lunch at Galatoire’s with a nice veal chop and Cote Rôtie.
Made a reservation for “Bordeaux.”…new on Magazine and if we have time, I have heard good things about “Gris Gris.” In addition, we will try Bywater Bistro for the first time. Love the city and it is always a challenge to balance our favorites with new openings.
For those who love the food at Shaya, Alon’s new place, Saba, doesn’t disappoint. It’s my favorite restaurant in NOLA.
Alon Shaya also released a cookbook, and it is a great read along with all of his signature dishes, which are very faithful to the restaurant version and easily doable at home. His hummus, lamb kofta, and pita recipes are on my regular rotation. His Pita/Pizza Dough is now my standard. I have the Ottolenghi books too, but I prefer Shaya. His wife’s Red Bean & Rice recipe is killer, too.

Any updates from March visits?
We are there 4/13-4/20, staying in Uptown, and have a number of things set up including Coquette, Compere Lapin and Maypop.
Considering Bywater…
That place was legendary when I was I high school (Shaw) in the 80’s. My dad, loved that place and introduced me to it. I have a several BBQ shrimp recipes from those folks that I like to make but there is only one “Shrimp Mosca”. Nothing even resembling fine dining but the shrimp were always worth it.
I will be there next week (4/10-12) and have dinner reservations at Saba. Will report back. My daughter goes to Tulane and Saba is now her favorite (used to be Shaya).
Has anybody ever been to Bon Ton Cafe. I never have but the classic old school menu always intrigued me, and I wonder if I should try it one day this coming trip?
