The 1995 Ursules note (thank you for the warning) reminded me that I’ve been wondering about the current status of the vintage. It drank well for while but my last few bottles spread out over the last 5 years or so have led me to believe it’s in a shut down state and shouldn’t be touched for a while.
Is that everyone else’s experience? I’m reluctant to experiment too much as I’m afraid of wasting the wine.
This is a vintage I keep my eye out for, but it’s kind of a frustrating one because maybe 1 out of every 4 will be stupendous, one will seem stale and DOA, and two will be kind of closed up and hard to tell which way they’re going. But then those stupendous ones keep motivating me to get (and open) more.
We did a big 95 horizontal last month - lots of notes on UK wine pages. Broadly speaking the wines needed more time. Not shut down completely but certainly not singing yet.
I think Keith’s summary is pretty accurate.
I’ve only had 10 or so over the past couple years.
Jadot CSJ was brilliant once, kinda shut down second bottle.
Faiveley LSG and Mazi were nowhere near ready last year.
HN Charmes was good.
For those who drink more than I…is '95 a good vintage, in general, and is a time thing?
I like '96 better…and even some '98s already.
