My first opportunity to meet with none other than board legends Philip Robert and Bill Landreth combined with Juan Mercado his latest wines from Realm and Flannery hangar steaks!!!
All I can say is go long on the Dr. Crane and The Bard for 2007. Both are superb.
The entire lineup is, as anyone who’s had Juan/Wendell/Mike H.'s wines knows, excellent.
Thanks to Juan for bringing so many enjoyable wines, to Philip for hosting, and to Bill for some great steaks.
From the vague texts I was receiving, it sounds like a good time was had by all.
The 07’s Realms are spectactular and I think the scores will be big (Realm already scores well, but…). I had the opportunity to try the 07 ToKalon a few times from barrel and once recently from bottle – trust me, it’s sleepy and backwards – there is one of the best wines made in 07 in there. And no, the Crane doesn’t suck by a country mile either.
The 2007 Dr. Crane is the real deal for sure. I also liked the Cab Franc driven Falstaff as well. There really wasn’t a bad bottle out of the bunch.
We also had a stunning 1989 Pichon Baron that P-Rob popped on a lark. Chris brought a 1970 Taylor’s VP that is still a baby. I also brought a 2007 Switchback Ridge CS to play along with the Realms from '07. It is a massive wine in the style that one would expect from them.
Ugh. Reading this makes it hurt even more that I had to miss it. But, it would not have been a pretty sight back at the home front had I gone. At least I can live vicariously through you guys for a while.
That’s cool… I’m glad you liked it. The merlot didn’t do it for me all that much with the 07 I had a couple nights ago but I think it just needs a little time to round itself out.
Kristi liked the Switchback better the next day against the two '06 Realm’s that I brought home with me. I think at this stage of the game, the cab needed the full day to open up and round out a bit.
