Ha, wow! I was so confused how this all worked out until I got to the part where he was 77 years old with a bag of wine bottles with him, lol.
I just kept envisioning either A) a wine bottle in a bottle cage, B) a cyclist finding bottles of wine at the bottom of a ravine, or C) an old cellar in the side of a mountain. 
Either way that guy is hard as nails. Also, how did he get the bottles open…? Smash just the neck??

My friend walked two miles on a fire road in the mountains after being blindsided by a running buck. No wine in the bike pack, but we did partake as soon as the meds wore off.
Craziest things happen when the wind blows a flying plastic bag into your gears … If you are out of luck you will need new cassette, chain and derailleur. And bandages.
Back to the story, isn’t that an ultimate proof that the bottle shock effect is overstated?
Shock and pain is a beautiful thing. I tore my shoulder and got a concussion crashing hard on a downhill run on a mountain bike in Yellowstone. waited for about 20 minutes for somebody to find me, and then finally just got back on the bike and painfully rolled down the entire mountain to the med tent.
As for the cork, does multi tools are a thing of beauty, or I just blast it out with a CO2 cartridge!
