I’ve been a lurker here for some time, and easily lose myself for extended periods of time enjoying all of your posts. Some great stuff on here.
Over the past year I’ve become fascinated with Red Burgundy (goodbye 401k!), and have been picking up recent releases. However, I’m lacking those ready-to-go wines, and am looking to pick a few up for a tasting next month.
Would you care to share some of your favorite red burgs that are currently in a great drinking window, and can be had ~$150?
I’ve zero’d in on some 1993 Jean Raphet Grand Cru’s that HDH has available, but I’m wondering if I’m missing an opportunity to drink something better right now.
Thanks in advance for your input… hopefully this thread sparks some great suggestions for anyone else looking to scratch a similar itch.
Look for 2000s. Drinking great and you can find many within your price range.
I’ve also had good luck over the past year or two finding reasonably priced back vintages of the big negociants – Jadot especially, but also Faiveley and Bouchard (for whatever reason I see Drouhin deals less often) – that have been wonderful.
Envoyer in particular often has cellar offers that include some back vintages. I think they just offered some 2000s yesterday in fact.
Try looking for 1991 and 1993 Rene Engel, if you can still find them. 1996 Rene Engel has largely vanished from the market.
Also, there are rumors floating around that the old hyper-Parkerized Dominique Laurent reds MIGHT be absorbing their oak and could be turning into nice drinks. But I don’t have any personal experience there.
Also, not Burgundy, but if you ever stumble upon an out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere shop with Vatan Pinot Noir gathering dust on the shelves, then buy them out - every last bottle.
I was going to say “Forey” [not to be confused with Fourrier - BLECCH - DNPIM!!!], but I just checked a few vintages on Wine-Searcher, and it looks like Forey has been “discovered”.
Sigh.
If I were you, I’d bid on that 1991 Rene Engel at K&L.
Hit the auction blocks and find some 64s and 69s - even the village wines are still bright and alive - take advantage of them before the market dries up for good -
One of my importer-friend used to get Forey. To support him, I bought mutiple bs from vintage 2005 ( most of them are village ). I have not touched any of them lately as they are 05.
So thanks …for the info as Foreys are very under-rated in Quebec, Canada. I will open his M-St-Ds and V-Romanee soon or in the fall.
As I have said elsewhere, I probably (1) like 1996s more than most people do and (2) think they are more ready to drink than most people do. I had a Pousse d’Or Pommard a couple of weeks ago that I thought was singing but the person next to me thought was closed and needed a lot more time. Of course, I love high acid wines like German riesling and he is not a riesling fan.
That being said, I think you could drink it very enjoyably now and, if well stored, I think it will last a good bit of time.

I’m on your side.
Have been a big fan of '96s for a couple years now.
