Raising funds for a Ukraine charity lunch including wines from JJ Prum and Schafer Frohlich. Manhattan, May18th

Dear friends,
I would like to invite you to the second benefit lunch for Ukraine International, a charity run by my friends, Ebru and Marshall Mayer.

The last one was held near the beginning of the war, and pro Ukraine feelings were strong, and we were one of the principal backers of the war effort. Things have changed in the recent past, and without much US support, it is looking a lot darker for the people of Ukraine.

However, this tasting however, is not designed to help the war effort, but to provide one of the most fundamental needs of the people. Clean water. We want to buy a truck that filters water, enough clean water for several thousand people.

With our last benefit, we raised only enough money to buy the front end of a truck, including the engine and seat belts, so it needed to be supplemented by other donors. This time, our ambition is a little more lofty: we want to buy the whole truck.

So we have put together a very special lunch at the Peking Duck House in midtown Manhattan. I love this restaurant, and have been going there for over 40 years. In that time, we figured that they have served around seven hundred thousand ducks, and I can proudly say I was responsible for several dozen. But it’s not only superb ducks that draws us; it offers some of the best Chinese food in Manhattan.

The wines
Shafer-Frohlich and Joh. Jos. PrĂĽm wines 1971-2021

We will be tasting a cross section of these wines from the bone dry Grosses Gewächs, all the way through to a rare Beerenauslese from 1971.

Shafer-Frohlich is of Germany’s most acclaimed estates, located in the Nahe region. Under Tim Frohlich, it has become one of Germany’s finest producers of dry white wines, the Grosses Gewächs Rieslings, known for their vibrant minerality, crisp precision, and remarkable aging potential. Their wines express the character of steep, slate-covered vineyards, particularly in Felseneck, Stromberg, and Bockenauer.

Joh. Jos. Prüm – A legendary name in the Mosel, Joh. Jos. Prüm has defined elegance and longevity in Riesling. The best vineyards are Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Himmelreich vineyards and we will taste the wines ranging from Kabinett, Spätlese, to Auslese. We will also be tasting some of the rare Goldkapsel wines, which are selected from the best barrels of auslese. We will finish with a Beerenauslese from the brilliant 1971 vintage.

Can you give us the organization’s website so that those of us who cannot attend (I live in California) can contribute?

Thanks.

David

Of course, and thank you for the suggestion.
