Quick TNs - '93, '98 and '99 Red Burgs Dujac, Lignier, DRC, Rousseau

Some quick impressions from memory. Wines were slow-oxed for 3 hrs and served blind.

First flight - Clos de la Roche, 98 vs 99, Dujac vs Lignier
I was hoping for a surprise upset here but the '99s were clearly better than the '98s and the Dujacs were preferred over Lignier.

’98 Dujac Clos de la Roche-
Nice stemmy complexity, slightly austere compare to #2. Both clearly Dujac (stems). Still this was quite good though the '99 was much better.

’99 Dujac Clos de la Roche-
This was fantastic and open for business. Gorgeous spicy nose and very complex on the palate. Clear best of this flight and the WOTN for many.

’98 H Lignier Clos de la Roche-
This was very good but the '99 had much more dimension. Less ripe than the '99 and showing oak.

’99 H Lignier Clos de la Roche-
More forward and slightly less complex than the Dujac but still great. This was clear #2 in the flight.

1993 Grand Crus-
The Engel and Rousseau were fantastic. The Mugnier is a let down and the DRC was a green stemmy trainwreck.

’93 Mugnier Musigny-
A disappointing performance. This wine was very much open for business but just simple in comparison to the others.

’93 Engel Clos Vougeot-
This is just awesome. Very pure and meaty with loads of spicy distinction. It received 4 of 9 votes for best of the flight (with the Rousseau winning with 5). It would have done even better but for some slightly rustic tannin which didn’t bother me a bit.

’93 Rousseau Clos de Beze-
This is very refined and supple with some real beauty. It seemed very elegant and almost regal in this lineup. Showing a bit of oak. I loved it, but ultimately preferred the character of the Engel. This was WOTF and WOTN for many. Awesome stuff.

’93 DRC Grand Echezeaux-
Nose of a pile of wet green leaves. Green tannin on the palate. Pretty bad unfortunately.

Thanks Kevin. I love living vicariously through you (not sarcastic)

That Engel sounds fantastic, Kevin. I guess there’s a reason (a couple of reasons, actually) it’s so difficult to find older bottles of Engel floating around. I hope you continue posting notes here, they’re always very informative.

When '93s fall, they fall hard.

Nice notes Kevin!

The 99 Dujac Clos St Denis we had at Apiary a few weeks ago edged the 98 Dujac CSD, but both were singingly delicious. And both blew the Jadot CSDs out of the water.
