Question: Inputing Auction Wines into Cellar Tracker

So here’s the scenario:

You got the winning bid on a lot of mixed bottles. How do you determine unit price to input into CT? [scratch.gif]

I’ve just divided them up based on the ratio that relates to their retail value

I divide them up myself. Or sometimes i have bought a mixed case of wines (North Berkeley once did a Burg sampler case; Garagiste has done the same in the distant past with German Riesling). Sometimes if I know that something has a lot more value I will allocate/futz based on what I know of values.

Is this a serious question?

I do what Eris does too…I use the new futz feature!

really, I use the other estimates and get a general sense what each is worth and then divvy up what I paid for the lot against what each might be “worth”

Yes. Many people are quite particular about how the track things, especially their purchase history. In the case cited it is ambiguous what you paid for a bottle, so asking for guidance on what others do is a perfectly reasonable question.

I take the total hammer price, add the buyers premium, add the shipping cost and divide by the number of bottles.

Jeff that doesn’t really work in a mixed lot though…what if the lot is a vertical of bordeaux and it includes 82 lafite and others…the “values” are vastly different…

and by the way, I’m one of the anal people Eric is referring to

Zachary

Other than insurance I am not sure why it matters and insurance normally pays replacement cost, providing you have adequate insurance.

Anyway, most mixed lots I buy consist of bottles that are within a $100 dollars or so of each other so no big deal. If I did buy a $3000 bottle with two $400 bottles I might change my methodology.

Easy. Put most of the purchase price on one of the “others” and assign $20 to the Lafite. That way, I can drink it guilt-free the next day with my Ramen Noodles.

Eric,

You should know better.

I expected more from Jorge. It would seem rather obvious to me. Just look up the values on either

a) an auction price database
b) wine searcher

Dan,

How do either of those options help me determine the ACTUAL price I paid and NOT the current value? newhere

How does any of the advice you get here determine that? I am newer here.

Dan, if they pay then CellarTracker automatically integrates current auction prices. They are just asking how to approach apportioning the cost. Some just divide by 12. Others futz and apportion.

People track current VALUE independently of the PRICE paid.

Eric

I am just giving Jorge a hard time. neener
