Why is Gruaud Larose CONSTANTLY an underperformer, price-wise?
Even in vintages where it’s garnered impressive reviews, it sells for far less than it’s Deuxieme companions. What gives??

Leve isn’t a big fan.

I have absolutely no idea, but I’m thankful for it. Interesting question, though. I’ll ask around from some people who would know.
Offhand, though, I do know that they produce a hell of a lot of bottles each year and have one of the biggest estates planted to vine in St-Julien, if not the biggest. This may be one of the factors.

Maybe the Cordier connection?
Is there still a connection? To my knowledge, Cordier sold Gruaud Larose back in the early '80s…
Affirmative. Cordier sold off the Chateau. Not exactly sure what year though.
A good example is the latest Zachys auction catalog:
01 Gruaud case for $350 to $500; Pichon L. $600 to $900; Calon Segur $400 to $600; Montrose $500 to $750
03 Gruaud case for $450 to $650; Calon Segur $600 to $900; Grand Puy Ducasse (5eme) $500 to $750
I think it’s just lack of sizzle. Although the wines perform well, AFAIK, there hasn’t been any upgrading of vineyards or facilities, nor any chi-chi consultant hanging about. Just be thankful they’re flying below the radar.

Although I was obviously jesting about the comment I made about the Leve, the fact that the Puppeteer has not highly rated their wines is an obvious reason their pricing has underperformed. As much as Parker denies his relationship to pricing, he has not rated GL well. The excellent 00 he gave a 90 to, Suckling 95, the 05 I believe a 93 Suckling 97. Just a few examples.
I wonder if part of the value issue is that the wines take patience and can be kind of tough when they are young.
Strong iodine notes. Some are turned off by them, but it definitely makes the wine less food friendly.
Just speculating.

Either '83 or '84, as far as I know. The '82s still had had the name of Cordier on the label.
