Jay, I would open the Syrah a few hours in advance, pour off an ounce or two and then put the cork back in. Our wines generally respond well to a few hours of air.
I’d decant the HSS for five years in bottle.

I opened the Rhys now before heading downtown …wow what a nose- dark fruit filling the room…and getting that black pepper
Not that it matters now, but I had best results doing a vigorous double decant 6 hours before service for the Rhys Syrah. Had it pop and pour a few months later and it did not show as well.
I was able to keep in decanter for an hour before putting back in bottle.
