Pyla sur Mer

Anyone ever been? What’s the area like (aside from the dune)? How much of a pain is it to drive to Pessac/BDX./St. Emilion for tastings?

Thanks in advance.

Jorge,

Haven’t been to Pyla, but many years ago I attended Vinexpo and stayed in Arcachon (near Pyla). The road was good and the drive to Bordeaux fairly quick, though I had a fast car and put its capabilities to good use! Then factor in the drive to Pauillac, St. Emilion, etc. As long as you’re making a day trip out of your visits and not expecting to go for a quick tasting somewhere, I don’t think it’s a problem. Then again, if you plan on going to chateaux every day, it might not work out quite as well.

While being in Pyla/Arcashon is not like being in the middle of things, spending time at the seashore isn’t such a bad thing!

By the way, to be fair I should add that if I had a choice (I didn’t at the time, everything near Bordeaux was booked) I would not stay at the coast if I wanted to do a significant amount of tasting or spend a lot of time in Bordeaux.
