PSA: Silenus (going out of business) sale

My case of Silenus ordered Wednesday shipped today.

You will be expected to be at door with a corkscrew. Notes please.

I doubt it’s going to make it in time. When I ordered on Wednesday, they had 3 wines for sale on their website. Now they are down to one.

I pulled the trigger on a case with some friends - figured $33 all in cost per bottle for the reserve was a small risk to take

And the remaining is the 2020. I don’t know enough about the geography of the valley and the smoke from 2020, but I suspect fear of that vintage is probably why it is the only one remaining.

As a note they show on the website that grapes were picked the 22nd i believe, and fires started 27th.

I still didn’t chance it.

Popped a couple of hours ago.
Upon first whiff was very nice. Classic cab on the nose, not too much oak and seems dark red fruited. Nice start.

Nice pure fruit on the initial taste nothing to complain about. Not sure how to describe it but it just has little depth. Almost no mid palate, no silk or mouthfeel…a bit angular so to speak.
Then very short on the backend, no lasting impression. Some tannin so maybe that’s to be revealed.

I guess this is the problem with Napa maybe. Would I be upset if I went and visited them and this was sub $50? Probably not. Is it upper echelon, well no. It’s lacking the refinement.

On the positive side, it’s not a spoofy overextracted mess either. Unless they went overboard with the reserve I don’t think those that bought will be disappointed at the price as it should be a decent wine with a steak ect.

I’ll split the diff with suckling and call it a 90.5

Thanks Robert!

I’ll gladly take a 90.5 on their lower end Cab, knowing that the reserves ā€œshouldā€ be considerably better, especially for $35 (including shipping)!!!

Thanks!

90.5 sounds pretty generous for that description!

By the way, thanks for taking one for the team and posting.

Well it’s a non overly manipulated cab, which is refreshing,
I would say it’s well better than your regular $25 supermarket cab of course.

Let’s see why the folks say who ordered the Reserve.

Edit:
Chris you are right though I wish we could get back to a say reasonable 80-100 scale. I don’t usually score wines but I thought I’d try to place in context of sucklings score to at least help the context.

I’m not buying any more of the regular at $30 (but I won’t start the GoFundMe :joy:

I’d imagine you should be happy.

Goodbye Silenus. Thank you for the wine deal, but we barely knew you.

All wine is now sold out on their website.

Looks like they have a couple vintages of Zinfandel back in stock. Apparently return from a distributor.

Eh, I’d love to have some, but adding $8 in shipping per bottle is a little more palatable on a $150 reserve Cabernet for $25 versus a $50 Zin for $15. Also a lot less reviews online for their Zin, so hard to tell if it’s any good.

My case of Silenus Reserve Cabs arrived yesterday safe and sound. Happy holidays and happy drinking to all! :wine_glass:

Anyone popped one yet?

Silenus 2021 Reserve Cabernet. Received yesterday, opened today. Quite dark, reticent on the nose, first palate impression is that of a sophisticated wine. With time, lovely understated Cabernet flavors emerge. Elegant, enticing, and ultimately enthralling. The bargain of the year for me and a solid 92 points.

Opened the 2020 on a whim. Pretty much agree with the above note…I just didn’t give it enough air time. At $25, I’m satisfied.

I did the same off the truck. I gave it a 2 hour decant. Nose was muted even after several hours. I agree with understated and well made at this point. Very primary and tight. I would give it a 90 at this time with good potential. I won’t touch another one for at least a year.

Has anyone else drank some of the Silenus that they ordered? How is it?
