Prove to me Magnums (1.5L) are better

it’s not, i was trying to get at that. it’s only “better” if you value the typical results, which in this case most wine people will. it’s not inherently better.

but it is inherently different.

We all have read the numerous notes that suggest the Mag was “better” in whatever way.

I’d love to do a blind 375/750/1500. I don’t think there’s a chance any of us could get it right.

Yes Y…different is a fair assessment but that’s never the projection.
Two 750’s will also be different. One will always be preferred I’d bet. But set a big bottle next to a small one and the big one is 99% always “better”

Tasting the same wine blind is obviously going to be hard, plus there’s bottle variation.

I don’t think the differences were particularly subtle for Krug 164, but I do believe the magnum is aged a year longer on the lees than a 750 and the 750 is aged a year less. Feel free to open $1.5k in krug 164 if you want to test this theory, no interest in opening any of my bottles.

Come on…you have thousands!
I have 23 :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: (and no Magnums)

I’m not sure I own very many wines where I have 375, 750 and mag. Probably the only wine I can think of off the top of my head is 2001 Rieussec.

I don’t own any more Krug 164 375s and don’t have mags of any other vintage. Maybe some other people have bottles they’d be willing to open for scinece.

For an accurate frame of reference, Robert

Which mags have you opened alongside matching 750mls?
From the same cellar and purchased on release and stored identically?

None, but that’s why I’m asking.
It’s often said the wine is better because of the vessel.
I’m seeking the why

I had a 1996 Domaine de Chevalier magnum and 750 side by side. Everyone preferred the 750.

Robert, nanooxygenation.

Daniel, looking at CT notes from 2023 the mag was not ready, The 750s referenced had hours of decanter time. Were the bottles from the same cellar and purchased on release?

perfect result. OP claims no one can tell the difference.

Not true.
I’m claiming we read that 99% of the time it’s in the praise of magnums superiority

Midas>Nebuchadnessar.

Is it a different wine if it comes off a dancer’s body first or…?

I always assumed something similar is what the + was in the 100+ wine in the hedonist gazette.

Luminous is also better, assuming it’s in the club.

Here a blind tasting of Champagne by Konstantin Baum. He tastes differences.

I have found that ace is always better in magnum than 750 and especially better in 3L. Haven’t gotten to the larger formats in the club yet, but we do have a Cirque le soir trip planned so I’m sure some big bottles will be opened.

but you also wrote this: “I’d love to do a blind 375/750/1500. I don’t think there’s a chance any of us could get it right.”

the folks that tried the 96 domaine de chevalier got it right - they observed a difference and made a preference.

I have magnums of 164 and 168. I have not tried the 164 from magnum, but I did have the 168 from magnum a couple of times earlier in the year and it was drinking great, better than I remember the 750’s.

Better for aging because of volume.
