Primera LX810 (or other) short-run label printer

Does anyone have experience with this sort of printer, for printing wine labels for short runs? I am starting my own label this year, but it will be tiny for the near future. By tiny, I mean 50 cases or so. At that quantity, the proof fees from a “real” label house can be bank-breaking, so I’m looking into alternatives. This or a similar printer might be the ticket. Thoughts?

Couldn’t you find someone with a label size that works for you and tag along on their label order? Assuming digital printing, the prices should be pretty reasonable.

I’ve used the Primera printer with several brands with less than satisfactory results…in fact, I had better print quality with weatherproof Avery labels. The Primera labels are not waterproof and smudge and scuff easily. Don’t even get me started on the quality of the UPC codes that this printer spits out!

If you want a sample, let me know.

Matt-
I had some good success using Gutenberg Printing in St. Helena. I made about 25 cases of Syrah in 07 and had a nice mock up label made and had it printed there. I thought for the cost they were great. They are printed on nice heavy stock paper. 4 to a page and they are cut down for you. Only down fall is you will have to hand apply them.

Thanks for the suggestions and info, everyone. I definitely won’t take the plunge before seeing it in action, and Erinn’s warning has me less than excited. Thanks for the St Helena tip, Macario. Hand-labeling ~50 cases wouldn’t be so bad. Once I need to do more, I can spend more.
