Totally. It’s not always a compliment to say - your wine does taste like where it comes from. But in this case, the wines show a California fruit but definitely the DNA of the old world. I think Oregon wines at their best do the same, are from here…but also are clearly family/cousin to where our grapes are native. Anyway, bravo Pietro. Fantastic work year after year.
Thanks Uli - I really appreciate that and it means a lot, for such a pedestrian ineffable thing it is the hardest damn thing to do, kind of like making the most basic pasta or something simple and boring on paper that I guess Clark Smith would say has soulful resonance and integrity
Thanks Vincent! Actually if I ever maker it back up to Portland I’ll buy you a beer since you work with several terroirs. I am making wine in a new county now, very different, different soils and different consumers, and it is quite a rabbit hole trying to understand what the grapes want to say beyond basic winemaking…
I am excited to catch up on your vintages as well

Just ordered a 6 pack, really looking forward to trying your wines!

In for a case! Always interested in seeing how Italian varietals do on California soil.
Thanks so much!
Thank you - we are fighting the good fight! So many great Italian cultivars could do so well in Ca.
Some of my favourite grapes + my home state.
Order in - excited to try! Thank you!
Purchased a mixed six pack and looking forward to trying them, thank you.
Thank you so much - hope you like them!
Awesome - thank you Marc!
I chose my own adventure:
2019 Aglianico
2021 Sagrantino
2020 Nebbiolo
2021 Refosco
2020 Negro Amaro
2019 Dolcetto
As a fellow small producer of unique varieties (including 4 Italians), I can’t wait to try these - wish there were more planted here in CA!
Thanks Dirk - where are you located and what are you growing?
Paso Robles - I source Trebbiano & Nebbiolo from Paso, and make Rose of Sangiovese (direct to press) from Chalone in Monterey County. Sadly, my Aglianico from Paso that I also made Rose from got torn out due to red blotch. Trying to get someone to plant some Nero d’Avola!
Cool! Our Aglianico came with red blotch. I have had some really nice Nebb and Sangio from cool Paso. Tried quite a few from Clesi in Templeton Gap
You have the pleasure of drawing first blood from me on this fine BerserkerDay, can’t wait for my mixed case to arrive!
Sagrantino x3
Aglianico x2
Refosco x2
Nebbiolo x2
Negro Amaro
Il Fuoco Segretto
Zinfandel
Hi, fellow Berserkers — my personal thoughts here: Prima Materia is solid gold, excellent BD16 choice. I’ve personally bought cases. Aglianico and Sagrantino are my favorites for deep, dark, and inky, and the lighter varietals are so pleasing.
