I just got on Square. Haven’t received the card reader yet, but you can still do transactions albeit at a slightly higher rate. They have been a bit overwhelmed by the response so things have been slow in coming… https://squareup.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Evan, the November event wouldn’t happen to be SF Vintners Market, would it? We’re going there.
Although I don’t have an iPhone yet, I ended up paying for a Wifi connection so I can process via a laptop. I’m interested to hear the answers to this thread though.
I used Swipe and it worked well
Accept Credit Cards with your iPhone with Swipe from AppNinjas" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Only complaint would be you had to reconfigure your merchant info each time there was an upgrade.
It worked with Authorize.net/Cybersource which is how we’re connected and my Cybersource connections vouched for it as a solid app before we started using it.
Looks like Square is the solution. Wish they had a web app to go along with the iPhone app. Waiting on the swiper but can get by without it for now. @Randy - yes Vintners Market, I’ve heard mixed results on sales there but we are willing to give it a shot. See you there.
Sasha at Eno Wines got a Square device for his phone - he’s got an Android phone, not an iPhone. He was showing it to a couple of us at the winery last weekend and it looks pretty cool. Definitely a nice option for an event away from the winery.
Here is an early review of Square:

My company creates mobile software (iPhone/iPad/Android, etc) apps. Are there features in an app like this that are missing and needed for wine transactions?
I saw some interesting mobile transaction apps from Intuit (Quicken) that also would have an invoice printer and tie into Quickbooks.
Here is their info: Accept Credit Card Payments Online | QuickBooks" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Look at their mobile solutions section – the demo I saw didn’t even need the swiper. Don’t know the merchant fee structure.

There was a winery pouring near me at the SF Vintners Market using a Square / iPad / external iPad keyboard solution to process sales… Nifty!
Got my Square reader last week. It’s pretty nifty. I haven’t used it in action yet, but ran a couple of test transactions and it’s quick and simple. The only downside is the lack of detail on the transaction, but it’s worth it if you can get paid on the spot…
