Portland. OR for a couple days, suggestions on food/wineries would be appreciated

Also, any good local wines I could keep an eye out for would be great. Thanks kindly

As far as wine shops in Portland, here are a couple of recommendations. Vinopolis has a huge selection(for Portland). If you’re looking for something specific, you can check out their website before coming.

Cru and Domaine has a great selection of older Oregon wines and aged European wines which is constantly changing. also, they usually have something open interesting to taste every week.

I’ll let others chime on wineries and restaurants.:slightly_smiling_face:

Been out of the Portland area for a few years now so I don’t have great up to the minute knowledge but here’s some restaurants that I still know:

Arden: Excellent dinner spot, very good wine list
Higgins: An old stand by, I just was there last week and they have the cassoulet on and it is still brilliant. Wine list is average but they are fine with corkage.
Davenport: Eclectic dinner spot. Probably best wine list in the city. Food is interesting and not necessarily for everyone but if its in your comfort zone it’s awesome.
Ox; Meaty place but not a steakhouse. Good wine lists (2 locations I think)
Pigeon/Canard; Still doing what they do. Intense food, especially Pigeon.
Jacqueline: Almost painfully French, delicious, wine list is…natural heavy let’s say

Italian; Mucca Oseteria, 3 Doors Down and Nostrana. All very good and all have decent wine lists.

Lunch spots: Maurice; very French downtown spot. Afuri, there’s 2 locations (or used to be) but the one in SE Portland is better. Ramen to DIE for but an extensive menu of utterly delicious stuff.

There’s tons of places I am overlooking but, again, I don’t live there any longer.

Doesn’t sound like dinner out in the valley is in the cards but if it is Earth and Sea in Carlton is my go to but there are lots of choices in McMinnville for sure and excellent Mexican food everywhere if you want some quick and delicious lunch.

Definitely check out Davenport. This was my favorite meal of my trip this past summer, and we hit some excellent spots in both Portland and McMinnville. As Jim said, the wine list is excellent, with nearly a full page of champagne. The restaurant is small, so you’ll want to make a reservation.

Flor is a fun wine shop in town that always has a good by the glass menu going on.

A few other spots in addition to the one’s already mentioned - none have particularly strong wine lists:
Kann: Getting a lot of press these days, really good Haitian food. Hard to come by a reservation, but definitely worth looking if there’s any availability while you’re in town.
Magna: Delicious Filipino food and some really unique cocktails.
Phuket Cafe: Great Thai food - right by Cru and Domaine, which was mentioned earlier.

Happy to provide more recommendations if there’s a specific area or type of food/wine you’re looking for.

Seconding Maurice – a really special place for lunch. Make a reservation if you can.

Try the Vinopolis wine shop. Close to downtown. Large inventory, which can be viewed online.

Maurice is eclectic but really interesting. Black pepper cheesesteak is delicious.

+1 for Davenport, Nostrana and Ox

Would add Eem.

Division wine co is in town. Really like what they’re doing with Chardonnay.

Portland has a number of great wine shops as others have suggested. I like all of those mentioned. E&R is my personal favorite.

EEM was really good. Forgot about that. Excellent mixed drinks too there.

Jim, native Portlander here; I was pleasantly surprised to see Higgins on your list. Glad to know they’re still going, had many great meals there back in the day before I moved away in ‘96.

No bigger Higgins advocate than me. Easily am over 1,000 meals there in my life.

EEM and Le Pigeon were definitely high points on a visit earlier this year. Shalom Y’all was very enjoyable as well.

I was able to easily arrange a tasting of the Morgen Long lineup of excellent WV chardonnay with @Seth_M_Long in Portland. Reach out to him if this is the type of thing you that interests you.

Davenport last month. Food is good. Wine list is better.

A few places that haven’t been mentioned:

Liner & Elsen is one of the oldest and best wine shops in town. Tell them I sent you and they will charge you extra .

Some other options that haven’t been mentioned: Gallo Nero (Italian in the Pearl), A Cena (Italian in Sellwood), Urdaneta (Spanish in NE), Coquine (Mt. Tabor), Laurelhurst Market (Meat - NE), Bar Casa Valle (Spanish in SE), and Gumba (Italian in NE).

And another vote for Davenport if you want really good, pure food and not a lot of fluff cooked by one of the best chefs in town. And “plus ones” on Mucca, 3 Doors Down, Nostrana, and Eem.

Feel free to DM if you have specific questions.

Oma’s Hideaway was delicious in spring of 2022. I’m not a local, so cannot compare it against other local places, but my buddy is a big foodie and was laser focused on trying it. It was a great call. He described it to me as Malaysian street food. I wasn’t really sure what that meant, but it was one of the best meals I’ve ever had.

Kachka is fantastic.
Had a great meal at Janken as well. A bit flashy but food was good.

Both Bow & Arrow and Division Wine Co are in Portland proper, and highly recommended. Twill Cellars is in West Linn, and also recommended.

Lots of good recs for food – let me second Coquine, Davenport, Pigeon/Canard, Higgins, Oma’s Hideaway.

Let me add Scotch Lodge to the list, though I haven’t been in a bit.

And if you want a less formal meal, there is so much great pizza here. The classics are Apizza Scholls, and Ken’s Artisan Pizza. Many are nipping at their heels, my favorite among them is Lovely’s Fifty-Fifty. I eat most often at Pizza Otto – fine pies, more local for me, and fewer crowds.

Two suggestions: Teutonic Wines (interesting line-up and great people) and Shalom Y’All (great food and cocktails and small, but thoughtful wine list).
