I would have given the distinction to Pinotage.

I like Silvaner/Sylvaner, actually! Seems that author does as well, but it certainly does NOT get any respect.
Nicely done article, I thought. Some of the best Sylvaners I’ve had have come from the AltoAdige.

Thanks for the link, Jorge, I enjoyed reading the article. I recently had my first Silvaner, an '08 Wirsching. I thought it was a lovely, refreshing wine, with some character to lend it interest, and it was cheap. Very similar to the author’s impressions of some of his bottles, actually. I posted a note, no replies. Case in point?
Yes, Alto Adige and Abbazia di Novacella in particular make INSANE Sylvaner capable of out aging most White Burgs.
I just had a Sylvaner from Abbazia di Novacella that was the best one I can remember. I’ll have to get a few more and lay them down for a bit.
If you’re interesting in checking out some of the other “crap” wines he mentioned, another great Alto Adige producer to check out is Kofererhof. I tend to like their Muller-Thurgau & Kerner best, and they also make a very presentable pinot grigio in addition to a sylvaner, plus one or two other things.
Not to mention a huge number of amazing Frankenweins from Germany.
Wish I had more Franken sylvaner. I had bought a bunch of Wirsching rieslings before realizing that sylvaner is by far the more successful grape there.
I was stationed in Franconia for three years in the 70’s including the amazing 1976 vintage. LOVE Frankenwein…
