Poll: New World v Old World

Do you prefer new world or old world wines?

  • I strongly prefer old world wines. New world wines are nothing but Kool-Aid with alcohol.
  • I prefer old world wines, but I will drink new world wines on occasion. While I usually listen to Vivaldi, occasionally I turn on One Direction.
  • I like new world and old world wines equally well; it all comes down to the wine. I also root for the Yankees and the Red Sox.
  • I prefer new world wines, but I will drink old world wines on occasion. I like shmoozing with CA winemakers…try doing that with Ray Walker.
  • I strongly prefer new world wine. Why would I want to drink a wine that smells like a barn and tastes like poopy diapers? Also, I love Jay Hack.
  • The Green Bay Packers greatest quarterback, i.e. Bart Starr.

What’s your drinking preference – old world, or new world?

My sense is that the board skews significantly old world, but it may also be a function of the fact that the palates of several prolific posters are in the old world camp.

11 am and you’re drinking already? Hope it’s something tasty!

I voted for option 3, but would like to write in ‘wears Burberry and gold chains.’ Don’t hate, congratulate.

Also my feelings for Jay Hack are mixed.

I had my first glass about 8am as I was getting ready for work – I had poured myself a glass last night and didn’t feel like drinking, but couldn’t let it go to waste.

The idea is that the two things seem diametrically opposed to one another, whereas Burberry and gold chains are a Chav’s official uniform.

FWIW, I’m in the same camp.

That, and I didn’t want to be associated with either Sox or Yanks.

I like barn, the gaminess of roadside kill, leather, iron and earth.

What’s my poll option?

I drink new world more often, but my preference isn’t really tilted toward one or the other.

Go Mariners!

I would have picked the first one (New World wines are kool-aid, etc.), except i really like old, good cabs ('80s and early '90s Phelps Insignia, Montelena, Dunn Howell Mountain, Mondavi Reserve, Monte Bello, etc.). Do those count as New World?

My answer, #3, intrigued me— so I went to Cellartracker to verify.

49.9% New World
50.1% Old World

Can I vote for 4 and 5, both of which are correct.

#3, but I’d like to substitute the White Sox and the Cubs for the Red Sox and the Yankees

Depends on what you mean by old world/new world. Are we talking about winemaking style, like old world wines are made traditionally in a more restrained style? If that is the case, then I think the terms old world and new world are getting more blurred each year. There are a lot of ripe, oaked up, “modern” wines being made in Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Rhone these days. Conversely, there are good examples of restrained, bright and balanced wines being made in CA these days.

Good lord, what’s with all the One Direction fans? Is this forum populated by a group of 12 year old girls?

Harry Styles gives me the feels.

Judging by how easily offended many of them are, I’d say yes.

That would explain some things. [wink.gif]

I’m not sure how to vote. I like my Cabernet to be from Napa. I like nearly everything else to be from the old world or least in an old world style. I do buy a lot of NW wines though.
And I not only like the Yanks and Sox but I also like the Cubbies and the Cards. I’m not sure how that happened.

Pick a lane, buddy. [swearing.gif]

Yeah, that would be like a guy who proudly wears the colors of Man United and Chelsea…but nobody would be that stupid.
