Podere Forte

On a whim, I picked up a bottle each of the '05 Petrucci and Guardiavigna. I rarely buy Tuscans, and I know less than nothing about these wines. They are barely a blip on CT’s radar. Can anyone enlighten me about what I purchased? Thanks.

Probably hopeless, but I thought I would give this a bump before I give up.

Speaking of giving up, I need to stop buying things that I know nothing about.

Seems like Antonio liked the Petrucci and Monica the other.

Yeah, I saw that. No disrespect to the critics, but I would prefer the feedback of a fellow Berserker.

You’re a Berserker nut up, open them, and post notes.

Good point.

I’d appreciate reading them, especially the Cab/Petit Verdot blend.

Look forward to them.

I still haven’t opened the '05’s, but I doubled down and bought a '03 Petrucci and '02 Guardiavigna. Last night I opened the '02 Guardiavigna (by Pungo).

The composition of the wine, let alone the ratios in the blend, appears to change by vintage. I see later vintages include cab franc, for example. This vintage is a blend of sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot, and merlot. The percentages aren’t listed.

I’m impressed. Unlike many Super Tuscans, none of the grapes are dominant and there’s very little evidence of oak. The tannins have fully resolved, and this seems to be at a perfect point for drinking. I could smell the wine halfway across the room after only a few minute in the glass. I’m not sure how to describe it other than to say it comes across as a thoughtful blend of sangiovese and cabernet – the characteristics of each are present, but nothing is out of balance. Strangely, it reminds me of a 2000 Mastroberardino Radici Taurasi that I drank last year. Dark fruits, mild spice, and very pleasant. I would certainly choose this wine over something like Guidalberto or Ornellaia, and I think the price (approx. $100) is fair among the world of Super Tuscans. Based on this bottle and the 2002 vintage in Italy, I assume the '05 needs at least five more years to be ready.
