Pliny vs Squatters Hop Risin?

i’m surprised there isn’t more love for Green Flash West Coast IPA.

we get this in NYC now even at Fairway. i think it’s great, but fairly powerful.

but i think the hard-core beer folks say it’s not the same/as good as before.

Man, I LOVED west coast when it was a regular IPA. When they F’ed with the recipe and turned it into a double, I felt it became too sweet and too one dimensional with the hops.

(edit to add that I sincerely did not read Yaacov’s post before I posted this…)

yep. super one dimensional, limited complexity, just sweet and big. Like a high octane oaky cab.

I think green flash’s version of alpine duet is probably a bit closer to their old west coast IPA in style. Similar hop profile too.

So sad. I haven’t had one in some time, as the place that serves West Coast fresh fresh near me on tap, Blue Dog Tavern, also serves fresh fresh Chimay Tripel, so I almost always drink Chimay.

For Nationally available Double IPA,s - I think Ballast Point’s Sculpin may be your best choice. It’s in cans now as well. Pretty consistent stuff.

sculpin is a single IPA no?

According to BA it is. Interesting to note that Sculpin is 7%, which is extremely close to Sucks, labelled as a DIPA at 7.85%. I believe 7.5% is the DIPA starting point.

Correct. IPA can be 5.5-7.5%. DIPA is 7.5-10%. It’s all about how you want to market yourself when you are at the 7.5% level. Do you want to be a strong IPA or a weak DIPA?
