2nd that recommendation!
I have to say I am utterly fascinated that you are going to do the Mosel without a car. Keep in mind I live in NYC and don’t own a car and hate to drive. I am very excited to see how it will all work out. Is the plan to take bikes on the train and use them to get back and forth from the train station? When I am in the Mosel my schedule is packed from morning to night with lots of work interruptions so saving time is critical. Let me know what else you need.
Not having a car would be a nightmare if I were traveling anywhere else… Hence my tastings (other than in Saarburg) extend only from Lieser/Mulheim to Zeltingen/Erden.
We are planning to take a bus from Bernkastel to the train station at Wittlich—hopefully it is as convenient as it seems.
We are also quite busy recently, so the trip might be a bit tenser than a normal holiday trip should be…
Thanks for all the advice!
If I drive next time, I would love to visit some more estates in Traben-Trarbach, Punderich, Dhron, Piesport, and other places in the Saar as well.
Should have time to visit soon again after since my interests in wine are almost exclusive focussed on the Mosel…
I live in Trier and don’t own a car either. There’s a train from Trier to Traben-Trarbach via Bullay. For your itinerary, it should be fine without a car.
We visited the Mosel a few years ago. It is gorgeous! Rieslinghaus is an amazing wine shop with wonderful people working there. They do have an active Instagram which should be helpful for figuring out when they are open.
We stayed in Bernkastel at Deinhard’s- their restaurants did not look super exciting. Unfortunately, there aren’t a ton of great restaurants easily accessible in the area without a car. We did enjoy Restaurant Graacher Tor for dinner- traditional German food.
Highlight of the trip for us from definitely JJ Prum. We ended up brining home about 10 bottles total in our suitcase in wine skins (although 2 didn’t survive). I’d definitely look into bike rentals ahead of time- we wandered in somewhere that didn’t end up having much inventory since we didn’t book ahead but it is a wonderful place for biking!
Welcome to the board!
If you bring back wine frequently, a Wine Check is a must. The boss around here (@ToddFrench) can get you a deal.
Thanks for the tip! Would love a discount @ToddFrench! Planning a trip to Lyon/Burgundy/Champagne and will likely try to bring wine back with us rather than shipping as the tariffs got us pretty bad last time ![]()
since you just missed BerserkerDay 17 (shame!!!) I’ll extend that discount code to you, good until 3/19/26
BD17OG is the code, for any Wine Check, but you probably want the ‘og’ one, the less expensive but larger one, that holds 12 bottles!
Thanks for the reminder about bike rentals! I will try to either call or email in advance.
As for bringing wines back, we are making the difficult decision to limit ourselves because of luggage allowance on Ryanair—though when I called one of the producers mentioned they could ship it back to the UK for us.
Oh no! Always afraid of that.
So did they crack open and completely soak/ruin the contents of your suitcase? Or did these skins contain the damage?
They actually contained it quite well! A little seeped out but no major damage (especially since it was Riesling and not a red).
Sounds good. Could have been a lot worse.
Came back to the US from Germany today myself, with 6 bottles, all safe. That’s pretty much my maximum per bag, maybe I’ve done one or two more.
Ohhh I could use one too!!
I have an extra one! ![]()
How do you not have one??? All the travel you do??
I drink the wine before flying ![]()
But yes, I definitely want one now!
Thank you everyone for the great tips! Most things are booked in now… I will get up early to go to Trier and have brunch at Yong Yong next Thursday before heading to Zilliken to taste at 2PM. Hopefully that maximises the time we have in Trier and Saarburg.
Unfortunately couldn’t get a spot at either Waldhotel Sonnora or Schanz which is a bummer…
I will be turning this thread into a trip notes beginning next week!
Excited to read your reports! Say hello to Yong for me!
We’d all love a trip report, but it will be easier/cleaner if you start a new thread. Just my .02cl.
Prost!
