Petit Verdot? Need some ideas.

All I have in the cellar is De Bortoli and Pirramimma. There has to be some other PVs/blends to try?

I recently enjoyed an ‘06 Petit Verdot by Paradise Ridge (from Rockpile Vineyard) that was outstanding (compact, dense, thick, yet round, richly textured, smoky blueberry qualities). They don’t make a lot, but Clendenen Family Vineyards’ Petit Verdots (from Bien Nacido, Santa Maria Valley) also tend to be exceedingly rich, balanced, elegant, perfumed.

Jim Cooley turned me onto the York Creek PV. It was very nice.

Casale del Giglio in Lazio makes a very good and inexpensive one.
Ones to pass on though, Murphy Goode and Jonata. The Murphy is too commercially friendly, and the Jonata was clearly made with the guy from Monkton in mind. It’s really hot too.

Pretty sure Realm the Absurd is mostly PV. Expensive though.

Mietz Cellars near Healdsburg offers a PV for about $30.

Disclosure: I grow Petit Verdot.
Only 23 cases or so were made, but the Cadence 2005 Camerata is 100% PV from Ciel du Cheval, and is a VERY fun wine if you can find it. Januik and Andrew Rich (an Oregon winery) are two other Washington State-sourced Petit Verdots that come to mind. If you ever have the chance, barrel-tasting through different wineries’ Verdots is a great educational (although borderline masochistic) experience–lots of tannin, lots of acid, lots of color, lots of everything…

Thanks one and all, some new names for me there. I have been reading about PV from Virginia but fat chance of finding any up here!!

Truchard in Carneros makes PV, it’s pretty good. Give the winery a call, I’m sure it’s available.

Leandre-Chevalier “Ptit Verre d’Eau 100%” is a 100% petit verdot from Bordeaux.

I would avoid Flynn’s PV from Australia unless you really like oak.
