Well, let’s get a conversation going. There is not a lot of age on the B&B portion of my cellar and I will poke around trying to find something with more age on it. I would like to try to not go voerboard with number of bottles so we get a chance to watch the wines develop in the glass without being rushed to get through everything, but if you absolutely positively have to bring three bottles per person, it’s OK. Subject to finding something with more age, how about if I start with these:
I’ve deleted my original proposed wines because I am bidding on some stuff at AMC that will be better and let’s see if I get it.

Does anyone want to discuss narrowing the theme? I’m bidding on a 1997 Giacosa Barbaresco Asili and I have the 2001 already. I could bring both of those if anyone has more of them and we could have a mini-verticle as one or two flights. I do not have significant age on most of my Italian wines, but I could offer a 1999 and 2001 Sandrone Le Vigne if people want to try that as a Barolo verticle. According to WA and Cellartracker, the Le Vigne bottlling goes back to 1990 so we might be able to fill in some more. On the horizontal front, I can’t offer much prior to 2000. I’ve got some mid-level 2000 barolos if someone wants to do a couple flights of “So how is that 100 point WS Vintage holding up after 10 years?” I’ve got 2000 Fontanafredda Barolo Lazzarito Vigna la Delizia; 2000 Vietti Barolo Brunate; 2000 G. Manzone Barolo Bricat and 2000 L. Einaudi Barolo Costa Grimaldi.
No. I’m just tired of listening to my wife tell me that she did not get a chance to appreciate wine #61 because she needed to clear her glass for wine #83. I will bring a white starter (probably a Corton Charlie just to prove that I own white Burgs) and two Killer B wines for the main meal and something in the Port department for desert (probably the 1963 Calem that once belonged to Golodetz). Since she hates Port, that won’t count, and I think she will be OK with three bottles for two people.
Hey, I just had a completely whacky idea (like that’s a surprise). My son has a sword collection. We could bring champagne and sabre it in the back yard at Pratts. If we do it at the begining when we are still sober, and we get some long armed leather gloves, it might not be too dangerous. We just have to be sure we can clean up the mess and I’ve never done it before.
PS - I lost the bid on the Giacosa Barbaresco Asili, so that’s off my maybe list.
I will be sourcing, since all my Piedmont wines are young. I’m thinking of a '78 Borgogno riserva Barolo. I’ll likely bring a Giacosa Roero Arneis for a starter as well.
Put me down for the '78 Pio Cesare Riserva Barolo, for now. If a theme develops, that I can contribute to, then I may change. Just wanted to put something out there.
Jay - please do NOT bring a sword, large knife, machete or any other pointy or sharp objects. There will be no sabering of champagne or any other bottles lest this be the last time we are invited back. Thank you.
I never know whether or not your crazy ideas are fact or fiction, so I had to make sure it was fiction.
You’re table is full btw - I have to post the names. My best buddy Andy (who is at my table) has four people coming. They just returned from Italy with a good assortment of wine and I’ll be posting their selections once I know what they are.
Anyone want to express an opinion on organizing the theme? I’m bidding on some interesting stuff at the AMC Internet auction this month. We could do 4 decades of Nebbiolo - 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s in four separate flights. We could try to put together some producer verticles, but I can’t be of much help since the only thing I can add is (I think) a 1999 and a 2001 Sandrone Le Vigne. Anyone have any opinions?
Got an email from one of my buddies friends, Dominik Montano. He and his wife would like to bring two '04 Barolo - Scavino Bric del Fiasc and Pira Vigna Rionda.
OK. I was outbid on everything at AMC so I have just reviewed and re-bid. If nothing changes, I will have a 1995 Scavino Bric del Fiasc. Anyone know anything about the 1992 Sandrone Cannubi Boschis? I could bid on that but I can’t find a review. No RMP and there’s not even a note on Cellartracker. Anyone know anything?
I own only one bottle of older Italian wine - a 1970 Monfortino that was given to me as a gift and I want to drink it with the person who gave it to me. I suppose if we had a few other Monfortinos I could change my mind, but I would rather get other stuff.
Some little putz bidder won the two lots I was trying to get by spiking me at the last minute and I did not get the wines I wanted to bring, so I will have to try to find some good stuff using other sources.
My better half, Vilma, won’t be attending this year. Instead, my good friend Brian Pawelski will be joining us. You may remember him from last year, that is if you remember anything .
